Descendents of James Rae & Elizabeth Anderson McCorkle of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania  (Emphasis on their grandson, John Maugridge Snowden McCorkle of Green Co., Kentucky)

While searching for the descendants of my McCorkle line in Green Co., KY, I discovered many references to John M. S. McCorkle and his wife Jane L. Buckner McCorkle. Although several published sources considered John M. S. to be the son of Samuel McCorkle Jr. of Green Co., I could find no evidence to support this relationship. Indeed, nothing about the life of John M. S. was in tune with the ancestors of Samuel and Sarah McCorkle of Augusta, Co., VA or their sons Samuel & John of Green Co., KY. John M. S. was a very well known lawyer and bank officer in Greensburg, KY and the author of Masonic ritual for the Kentucky branch of that lodge. He married the daughter of Capt. William M. & Elizabeth Robards Buckner, a wealthy Green Co. family. The names of the children of John M. S. and Jane did not resemble the names of the Augusta Co. McCorkles.

With the help of Sherrie McCorkle, Karen Smith and Robert Wilson, I was able to establish that John M. S. was the son of William and Catherine Snowden McCorkle and the grandson of James Rae & Elizabeth Anderson McCorkle of Philadelphia, PA. Since the Augusta Co. McCorkle line originated in eastern Pennsylvania, it is quite possible that James Rae and Samuel of Augusta were related, but I have not found any evidence of such a relationship. I have included this pedigree because I have not seen this information included in any published genealogy.  This data may be helpful to McCorkle researchers trying to sort out the descendants of James Rae, his son William and his grandson John M. S. To see the data I have accumulated on the descendants of this McCorkle branch, search the James Rae of Philadelphia Data Base.

Addendum: I have received additional information on William & Catherine Snowden McCorkle from John Snowden. Catherine was the sister of John Maugridge Snowden, the person for whom John Mauridge Snowden McCorkle was named. William McCorkle and John M. Snowden were partners in the newspaper publishing business. The very interesting story of their publishing careers can be viewed at John Snowden’s web site, The Snowden Family of America. Also, this story and other similar ones can be found in The Tryanny of Printers, by Jeffery L. Pasley.
