Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm Jorden’s the 10^th of ye 6 mo 1699.

The orders of this meeting are as followeth viz:

Matter of difference between Henry Watkins and James Howard referd to sometime between this & the next mo meeting.

Alexander Makenny being accused of drunk----- ----- proved.

It is agreed at this meeting that James Howard and Nathaniel Jordan with their conflict have in this case to ---- good orders in the meeting and always as they shall see themselves ---------. It is also agreed upon and ordered by Friends of the meeting that if any member belonging to this meeting run out contrary to the truth with out ----- satisfaction to the meeting when it appears -------- any person belonging to our aforesd meeting –------- should by giving the hand as is -------------- shall be looked on as an offender and his ---------------. The judgment of the Sd meeting and ------------ L--- faction shall be denyd by Friends.

This meeting adjourned till the next ---- day of the next month.

Ordered at this meeting a paper of condemnation being given and presented to this meeting by Joseph Pleasants which was taken --- consideration desiring to be better satisfied and ----------- orders the papers to be kept by Jo: Woodson Jr.

The pretended prophecy of Nathaniel Jordan against New Kent meeting is rejected by this meeting. Ordered by this meeting that John Woodson and Jno. Woodson Jr. discourse Henry Watkins Sen. About this difference between him and James Howard and to define him to be at the next Monthly Meeting.

Woodson Jun concerning Henry Watkins & James Howard. ----- this meeting James Howard did acknowledge that he was reconciled with Henry Watkins with James Howard only he has made a rash promise ------------ take him by the hand.

Joseph Pleasants by consent of the whole meeting is chosen and appointed clerk.

Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm Porter’s ye 8^th day of ye 1^st Mo 1699.

Thomas Lankford and Martha West ------ this meeting publish their intention of marriage. Ordered first Charles Fleming and G. Robt Ellyson doe inquire into the sd Lankford clearness and make their return to the next mo meeting.

Ordered that the execs of John Woodson dec. make return of the loose papers which ----- Were in his hand belonging to the Mo Meeting

Ordered that Jno Woodson and Jno Pleasants -------- doe oversee the building of the new meeting house and to get it done with what speed conveniently may be.

Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm Porter’s Jun. the 12^th day of 2^nd Mo 1700.

The persons appointed at the last mo meeting to inquire into the clearness of Thomas Lankford and Martha West made returns within meeting, that they find them clear from all others on account of marriage or other ----------. Therefore suffered to proceed in their aforesd intentions who did at this meeting publish themselves the second time according to the lawfull order of Friends.

At this meeting was given in a paper of condemnation by Ricc Hughes which is as followeth- . Friends I am made by the convictions of God and the guilt of my own conscience confess my wicked act of drunkenness before God and this meeting. It being an act defiable in the light of God and all good men, friends, therefore – I have given great caution. If the ---- to speak evil of the way of truth----------not taking heed to walk accordingly as the same blessed truth directs nor heeding the admonition of my friends who in love admonish me to forbear drinking but to my great grief I had not power at that time to receive his good advice but went on ----. It was almost too late to repent but by the mercy of God I am yet alive and in hope to obtain pardon for my sin hoping the Lord will give me the peace to be more watchful hereafter. Friends I have something in Life upon me (if I may be worthy to ---- all people but especially friends not to go to a public place of meeting without a necessity house and lawfull business require them least having non such beliefs that great enemy of man’s soul, the devil finds them some to doe for him as I by sad experience can tell being deluded into that error by neglect of watchfulness and better imploy in myself at that time – having no buying to be there but ---ess which I think ---- the devil an opportunity to betray me. Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm. Porter’s the 20^th day of the same 1700.

The words that were spoken by William Jordan against New Kent meeting ---- his prophecy rejected the 6^th of ------ 1699 before the ----Mo Meeting is this day rejected by James Howard.

Ordered before this meeting that no pretended Friend who is out of unity with the whole meeting shall have any role in this meeting. In point of business amongst Friends. It is agreed on between this meeting and John Pleasants that he the sd Pleasants build the before mentioned meeting house of thirty foot long and twenty foor wide according as he thinks most convenient and to be paid when the work is finished and the charge brought in.

This meeting adjourned to --- a final time as aforesaid.

Att a Mo Meeting held at William Porter;s Jun. the 9^th day of the 4^th mo 1700.

Wm Lead and Huldah Binford did at this meeting propose their intentions of marriage. The second time being once before public at Merchant Hope Mo. Meeting. -------------- according to the order of Friends and have consent of this meeting to take each other when they and their friends see it convenient.

Benjamin Woodson and Sarah Porter did also at this meeting propose their intentions of marriage, the first time.

Henry Watkin s Junr and Ephraim Gartright are appointed to enquire into the Clearness of the sd Woodson and make their report thereof to our next Mo Meeting.

This meeting adjourned ------------------------ time as aforesaid.

Here followeth a Copy of Thomas Lankford marriage certificate.

Whereas Thomas Lankford of New Kent County and Martha West daughter of Giles West of the same county have proposed their intentions of marriage before two severall meetings of the people -------- called Quakers who after due inquiry of their clearness . It appearing to them that the relation of the said Martha West were consenting to this marriage did give their give their consent that the sd parties should accomplish their sd intentions. Wee therefore whose names are underwritten do certifie all -------------- that the sd Thomas Lankford and Martha West did at a meeting ----------------------------------------- aforesaid county the 25^th day of 2^nd mo 1700 --------.And there take each other he the sd Thos Lankford taking her the sd Martha West by the hand declaring that in the presence of God and this congregation I take Martha West to be my lawfull wife – till death shalle part us and she the sd Martha West then and there declaring that in the presence of God and this congregation I take Thomas Lankford to be my lawfull husband till my death and for confirmation the sd Thomas and Martha did set to their friends and --- which names are underwritten are witnesses.

The persons appointed to enquire into the clearness of Benja Woodson and Sarah Porter make --------- to this meeting that satisfied the clear from all other --------- of ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ proceed in their aforesaid intentions who did in this meeting publish themselves the ----- twice according to the carefull order of friends.

This meeting adjourned till it’s aforesaid time.

Here followeth a copy of Benja Woodson marriage certificate which is as followeth.

Whereas Benjamin Woodson son of Robt Woodson of the County of Henrico and Sarah Porter daughter of Wm Porter Jnr of the same County have proposed their intentions of marriage before two several meetings of the people ------ called Quakers who after due inquiry of their claim anjd it apering to them that the relationhs of the sd Benja and Sarah were consenting to their marriage did give consent that the parties should accomplish their sd intention. We therefore which names areunderwritten do certifie all whome it may concern that the sd Benja Woodson and the sd Sarah Porter did at the meeting house of the aforesd people in the reported county the 25^th day of the 5^th mo 1700 then and there take each other there for husband and wife, he the sd Benja Woodson and taking her the sd Sarah Porter by the hand and declaring that in the presence of the Lord and before this congregation of people – I Benjamin take Sarah Porter to be my wife promising to be a true and loving husband to her till death part us and the sd Sarah Porter then and there declaring that in the presence of the Lord and before this congregation of people I Sarah Porter take Benjamin Woodson to be my husband promising to be a true and faithful wife to him till death us part and for the confirmation thereof the sd Benja and Sarah did set to their hands ---- whose names are said so written are witnesses:

Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm Porter’s Jun the 8^th day of 7^th mo 1700.

Att this meeting was a supposed copy of Nath. Jordan’s shop----- brought by Alexdr Maken--- and a reference therewith is find ---- the next Mo Meeting because Nathl Jordan is not here – neither is there a full meeting at the time.

Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm. Porter’s Jun the 11^th day of 8^th mo 1700.

Friends being generally dissatisfied concerning some words spoke by Nathl Woodson in New Kent meeting formerly intitled his prophecy this meeting has hence forceded that Jno Woodson and John Crew sometime between this and the next Mo Meeting doe -------- the sd truth about it. The meeting may receive satisfaction concerning the same before his personal appearance here.

At this meeting was money gathered towards paying for the ---------- built in the Yearly Meeting House at Lewis Neck which is freely given by severall friends which names are ----- written;

Att A Mo Meeting held at Wm Porter’s Jun. the 8^th of the 9^th mo 1700.

Ordered that the order of the last Mo Meeting concerning Nathaniel Jordan be still continued because the parties appointed had not ----------- to complies with the former order. At this meeting Joseph Woodson desired consent of Friends to take Jane Woodson her being nearly related to him. The answer is seferd to the next Mo Meeting because Friends are not generally agreed.

This meeting adjourned till its usual time as aforesaid.

Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm. Porter’s Jun. the 10^th day of ye 11^th mo 1700.

The answer of Jno Woodson and Jno Crew who were appointed to discourse Nathel Jordan is as follows: This day ----- did counseled Nathaniel Jordan and his answer was that if he had done anything untruth he condemned it and he could give no other answer. Jno Woodson, Jno Crew.

This meeting being still dissatisfied concerning ----- foresaid words spoke by Nathaniel Jordan at New Kent meeting formerly are ---- generally agreed that the sd Nathaniel Jordan is not to be looked on as a member of this meeting till he hath given satisfaction to sd meeting.

Joseph Woodson hath leave of this meeting to publish his intention of marriage when he thinks convenient except four members of the --- and ---- meeting who are Jno Crew, Jno Robinson, Jane Pleasants and Mary Howard who think they are to near a kin, they being second cousins.

Ordered that Jno Pleasants be paid five thousand and fifty pounds of tobacco for building and ----ing the outside work of the meeting house ready payed this year out of the tobacco gathered as ------ info 4 proportionaly from every -----.

This meeting adjourned to its usual time as aforesaid.

Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm. Porter Jun. the 9^th day of ye 12^th mo 1700.

Nathaniel Jordan did at this meeting condemn his foresaid words spoken at New Kent meeting in the following words: Friends, I doe clearly de---- and condemn at the forward words that I spoke at the meeting at New Kent and am herewith sorry for them and repent of all that evil I did contrary to truth therein. Nathaniel Jordan.

Joseph Woodson and Jane Woodson did at this meeting propose their intentions of marriage – the first time.Janitt and Ephraim Gartwright are appointed to enquire into the ----------- and clearness of sd Joseph and to make return to the next Mo. Meeting.

At the request of Mary Howard friends of this meeting are willing that there be a meeting held at James Howard’s the third first day in every month.

This meeting adjourned to its usual time as aforesaid.

Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm. Porter’s Jun. the 7^th day of the first mo 1700.

The persons appointed to enquire into the clearness and --------------- of Joseph Woodson makes return to this meeting that they find nothing to the contrary but that he is clear as also of Jane Woodson clearness. In relation to marriage or otherwise were therefore suffered to proceed in their aforesaid intentions, who did at this meeting publish their intentions the second time.

Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm Porter Jun’s the 11^th day of ye 1 month 1701.

Dear Friends, I am now come to condemn my ------ and ------ to the world the -------- hard been a grief to God’s Spirit but thanks be to ----- name for giving me power therefore I condemn it all and am heartily sorry for them keeping in mind my life ---- desires to remain a ------ --------- friend, Robert Crew

Att A Mo Meeting held at Wm. Porter’s on the 9^th day of the 3^rd mo 1701.

It is agreed upon between this meeting and E. Mosby that he the sd Mosby seal the inside of the meeting house with ------- pine boards as m ake the door f------- plank and large cross nets for to hand the door and nails for all the work in his own cost and charge for which he is to have fourteen hundred pounds of tobacco when the sd work is finished.

This meeting adjourned to its usual time as aforesaid.

Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm. Porter’s Jun. the 6^th day of ye 4^th mo 1701.

At this meeting complaint was made against Alec Hughes concerning his unchristianlike behavior toward his wife. Friends have therefore that ------ Makency and G. Robt Elyson goe to sd Ricc Hughes and admonish him concerning his abuses done to his wife and to desire him to be at our next Mo Meeting.

This meeting adjourned to it usual time as aforesaid.

Here followeth a copy of Joseph Woodson’s marriage certificate.

Whereas Joseph Woodson son of Robt Woodson of the County of Henrico and Jane Woodson daughter of Jno Woodson Jun. Decd of the same county have proposed their intentions of marriage before two several meetings of the people ------ called Quakers who ---- due enquiry of their clearness and it appearing to them the relationship of the sd Joseph and Jane were consenting to their marriage did give consent that sd parties might accomplish their sd intentions. Wee therefore whose names are underwritten doe certifie all whome it may concern that the sd Joseph Woodson and Jane Woodson did at the meeting house of the aforsd people in the County aforesd the 27 day of the first mo 1701 there and then take each other for husband and wife he the sd Joseph taking the sd Jane by the hand and declaring that in the presence of the Lord and before this congregation of people I Joseph Woodson doe take Jane Woodson to be my wife and the sd Jane Woodson did then there and then in the presence of the Lord and before this congregation of people I take Joseph Woodson to be my husband and for confirmation thereof the sd Joseph & Jane did set to their hands and ---- whose names are underwritten are their witnesses.

Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm Porter Jun the 11^th day of the 5^th mo 1701.

The friends that were appointed to discourse Alec Hughes and ---- him to this meeting say that he promised to be at this meeting to the failure of his promise this meeting have decided that Wm Porter Jnr, Edward Mosby, Robert Hughes and John Atkinson goe to the sd Alec Hughes and know of him the reason of his not comeing and endeavor if by any means they can make -----------ication between him and his wife- and to desire him to be at our next Mo Meeting.

This meeting adjourned to its usual time as aforesaid.

Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm. Porter Jun the 8^th day of ye 6^th mo 1701.

Nicholas Hutchins and Mary Watkins did at this meeting propose their intentions of marriage the first time – Henry Watkins the father of the aforesaid woman consenting thereunto saying that he would not be their hindrance – this meeting has therefore ordered that Wm. Lead and Benja Woodson do enquire into the clearness and ---------------- of the sd Nicholas Hutchins and make return thereof to the next Mo Meeting.

The persons appointed to goe to Alec Hughes accordingly went to him and he coming ----------ing was desired and sayeth that he is sorry for what is past and will endeavor to amend his life. This meeting therefore is willing to wait to see the further life and conversation of the sd Alec Hughes before they proceed to deny him as being a member of their religious society.

This meeting adjourned to its usual time as aforesaid.

Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm. Porter Jun the 10^th of y 7^th mo 1701.

The parties appointed to enquire into the clearness and conversation of Nicholas Hutchins made return to this meeting that they have found nothing to the contrary but that he is clear. In each respect they were therefore suferd to proceed in their aforesd intentions who did at this meeting publish themselves the second time according to the order of Friends.

This meeting adjourned to its usual time as aforsd.

At a Mo Meeting held at our meeting house the 10^th day of the 8^th MJo 1701.

No business appearing at this meeting it is therefore adjourned to the sixth day after the first day of the ninth month 1701 and to be at the house of Wm Porter Jun.

Here followeth a copy of Nicholas Hutchins marriage certificate.

Whereas Nicholas Hutchins of the County of Henrico and Mary Watkins daughter of Henry Watkins of the same county have proposed their intentions of marriage before two several meetings of the people in ---- called Quakers who after due enquiry of their clearness and it appears that the relation of the sd Mary from consent is to their marriage did give consent that the sd partys might accomplish the sd intentions.

We therefore whose names are unde3rwritted doe ----- all whom it may concern that the sd Nicholas Hutchins and the sd Mary Watkins did at the meeting house of the aforsd people in the course aforesd the 9^th day of the 9^th mo 1701 then and their take each other for wife and husband he the sd Nicholas taking the sd Mary by the hand and declaring that in the presence of the Lord and before this congregation I take Mary Watkins to be my lawfull wife promising to be to her a kind and loving husband till death and she the sd Mary Watkins then and their declaring that I take Nicholas Hutchins in the fear of the Lord and before this congregation to be my husband and promising to be a true and loving husband till death and for confirmation thereof the sd Nicholas and Mary did set to their hands and wee whose names are underwritten are their witnesses.

Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm Porter Jun the 7^th day of the 9 mo 1701

Here followeth a copy of a request of James S. Howard and Mary his wife --------------- this meeting.

From James and Mary Howard to the Mo Meeting. Friends were thought fite to acquaint ----- that wee are willing to ---------- have a first day meeting at our house – hoping it will be for the ------- of the Lord and prosperity of his -------------- truth hoping you have nothing against it wee desire it may be set down in the meeting book according to which request Friends give their consent that the sd meeting be continued as it is desired.

The Meeting adjourned to is usual time as aforesaid.

At a Mo Meeting held at Wm Porter Jun the 10^th day of the 10^th mo 1701.

It is agreed on by the Meeting that there be a Quarterly meeting held at James Howards. The seventh Day after the first fast day of the week in the 10^th mo 1701

This meeting adjourned to the usual time as aforesaid.

Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm. Porter’s Jun the 8^th day of the 11^th mo 1701.

No business apearing at this meeting it there adjourned to its usual time as aforesaid.

Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm Porter Jun the 12^th day of the 1st mo 1701.

No business appearing at this meeting is therefore adjourned to its usual time aforesaid.

Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm. Porter’s Jun the 10^th of ye 2nd mo 1702,

Edward Mosby was at the meeting discoursed with ---- concerning his delaying to ---- the collecting ---- as by argument made with him the topic mentioned and his answers were that he ------now goe about it aoe it with all respects.

The meeting adjourned to its usual time as aforesaid.

Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm. Porter Jun ye 7^th of ye 6^th mo 1702.

Att this meeting was brought a ------ of the Friends books by Joseph ------- which were d----- to him from the Mo Meeting at York ------- and two -------------- books and if Jno Swain unbound and one bound the -------- of the old and new testament which books we ---- to be left at Wm Porter Jnr for the ---- of Friends belong to this meeting.

This meeting adjourned to its usual time.

Att a Mo Meeting held at wm Porter Jun. 4^th of the 7^th mo 1702.

Ordered by Friends of this meeting that there be a meeting held at Wm Porter Junr in -------------------------------------------------------------------------concerning Friends belonging to the weekly meetings of ------- Curles and James Howard’s the second seventh day after the full first day in every month and two friends are ordered ------------------ meeting from everyone of the ----- -------the next meeting that ---------------------------------------- at this place.

This meeting adjourned till the --------- seventh day after the first ----------------------------- in the 7^th mo 1702.

Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm Porter Jun the 25^th of ye 7 mo 1702.

There not being a full meeting time at this time there being -------------------------------- members from James Howard’s meeting. This meeting is therefore adjourned till the second seventh day of the week after the first first day next month.

Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm Porters Junr for deciding business amongst ye friends the 7^th day of the 8^th mo 1702.

Some members being wanting ---- their b---------- to the meeting held at James Howard’s ----- the members hereafter ----have thought fit to proceed in the business ------------------------ That is ------ and it is ----------- that --------------------- doe apear at the next Mo Meeting held at this place and there to their good -------- for ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------. To the Di------tion of the meeting to be held as above.

It is proposed by this meeting that care be taken for the poor in ----------- for their relief from Friends.

Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm Porters Junr the 14^th of 9^th mo 1702.,

Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm Porters Junr the 20^th day of the 12^th mo 1702.

The report of Wm Porter Junr who ws appointed to warn the three Friends belonging to the meeting at James Howard’s to apear at this meeting this day is that James Howard one of them in -------- of himself nd the other two ordered that they thought not to come because it would cause suits and arguments and he was grown --------. Therefore edid not desire therefore he did not design to come for his part. By order of a former meeting held here the 7^th of the 11^th mo 1702 I was ordered that two friends from one of the three meetings, ----- Curles, New Kent, --- Jas Howards should meet at this place for deciding of cursing among friends otherwise the meeting to be adjourned till the next in course of the friends above members but they also from James Howard’s not coming -------.To the intent of that order particularly James Howard refusing and other neglecting and by that means puts the meeting in a ------------------------. They are not thereby made incapable of making any -------- for deception of witnesses aforesd. Things naturally confided and that friends may be kept in unity tis henceforth ordered that four friends from the two meetings, that is Curles and New Kent two from each meeting them the sd friends may join henceforth meet on the day appointed with the clerk shall be accounted sufficient for deciding of beliefs among friends.

Att a Yearly Meeting held at our Meeing in the Isle of Weight County the 21/22^nd days of ye 7 mo 1703.

It is agreed and ordered by the above sd meeting that there shall be two friends appointed to give ---- The efforts of every old meeting to the Yearly Meeting name of sd followeth.

To lay for the Monthly Meeting of ------- ------- Danll son ---- and John Small & for the Monthly Meeting of Curles James Howard and Charles Fleming and --- the Monthly Meeting of Warwick John Young and John Bates which above sd friends are ordered to attend our Yearly Meeting to give anyone accounts of things as they stand as to matters concerning the affairs of each Monthlie Meeting and are deferd not fail but if you cannot apear by reason of -----ness or some extraordinary matter there to send your accounts in meeting with care and in order and in good time.

It is ordered that every Mo Meeting as above shall once a month make a collection of money when met to insert into the affairs of the Church and that each monthly meeting doe appoint two honest friends to receive what money is colectd and to keep it till such time as need to make of it for publick service.

That such friends as are chosen by their Mo Meetings for the service abovesd shall take great care to make enquiry of such traveling friends as shall come to visit the meetings belonging to their monthly meetings and they shall not be ----- to such friends to help them by money or service as their need may require also ---------------------- friends as comes to ---- friends and are for returning. Then such friends as chosen as above shall take care that traveling friends be carefully con-----gned to the next meeting.

4^th, And that every friends as both keep monthly meeting books fail not to bring such books their Mo Meetings and there take great care that what is ordered and concluded in by the Meeting be forthwhile underd reading to the ----- of the meeting.

5^th. It is ordered that if any friends have occasion to speak concerning beliefs in monthly meetings ----- is not to speak their minds if any be speaking before them but to keep these till the last hath done.It is ordered.

6thly. It is ordered that if any friend hath committed any thing contrary to the profesion they have made of God’s truth and hat come to be sorry for their outrunning and hath return and come to make satisfaction to God and friends for their outgoings and comes to a good referinatio--. In their lives then no friend is to any refle------- on them for their former weakness whether in meetings nor out of meetings.

7thly. That we friends as friends shall after the death offer --- husband or wife takie second or third husband or third wife until the full quorum of twelve months be compleat of respect after the former husband or wife be departed this natural life.

8thly. And that minutes be taken of this and sent to every Mo. Meeting and there to be recorded in the Monthley Meeting book of Virginia.

9thly. It is ordered by the Yearly meeting abovesd that the books of second be----ing to the Yearly meeting be kept by Nathon Newby and Danll Sanborn.

10thly. It is ordered that every Mo meeting doe appoint one friend belonging to their meeting that is capable to give to the vestry’s belonging to their parts and there to evidenced and there is endeavored to know what tobacco is learned on every tithable. In the promise on the account for the priests dues and sheweth roles and then to make return to the Mo Meeting they belong to.

Whereas it was ordered Last Monthly Meeting that Joseph Pleasants should send a copy of an order of the sd meeting to James Howard which was to desire him to be at this meeting and having sent it accordingly the sd James Howard doth not come to this meeting as it was desired to have some conversation with him about some matters mentioned in an order of a Yearly Meeting held at Pagan Creek in the Isle of Weight County. It is therefore ordered that the whole matters be left to the next Yearly Meeting.

Henry Gill did give unto this meeting a paper of consideration concerning his marriage by the priest and other things.

Wm Lead acknowledged that he is -------------ing for all the forward words he hath spoken concerning this meeting or any member thereof there eing some diference particularly between Charles Fleming and James Howard and the aforsd James Howard doth in this meeting acknowledge that he believes the sd Fleming to be clear from those suspicions that (re) the diference and is sorry for his forward publication thereof.

Whereas Brian Coker hath asked the consent of this meeting to take Rachel Handley daughter of Thomas Handley to wife and after due consideration of this meeting there upon and it appearing that the parents and friends of the young woman have already given their consent to the sd marriage. The major part of friends therefore are of opinion that they may take each other in the meeting for wife and husband after due publication thereof at New Kent and our next meeting for worship held at this place. Samll Jordan and Henry Watkins only dissenting from this opinion.

At this meeting a paper of condescention was given in by Thos Handley which is as followeth-

To a Monthly Meeting of friends to be held at Wm Porter’s Jnr 9^th day of ye 12 mo 1704. I underwriten having this motive oning ----- and concerned that while I have been lately most notoriously abused by the commonness of mankind and not keeping the principles of truth in mind giving way to the same – have committed two great evils of drunkenness and outrageous pos--- I suppose to frequently take a notice---ion that the cucum s-------s. Thereof our used less to relate and I ------- hath pleased the merciful God to give me a real and hearty deuce of the same and unfeigned son of God. The same and a necessity to bring the sd lesons actions to judgment and after to condemn the same as heinour ofences to God and scandalous to the profession of the glorious truth of the church of God. The late omissions and miscarriages which hath in a ------ To agree disparaged with all the abusing of Ralph -------- at his store and affectionately refusing up ------- ye friend G. R. At a Mo Meeting of friends at Wm Porter’s I the ---------- having this motive on my conscience that whereas I formerly received a --- beliefs and ------ made a profession of the truth but not watching so carefully as I ought to have done. The c--- ----------- of mankind prevailed so far that I ran out ------------. The profession I had made and the Society of Friends and in the sd time acted those things which were contrary to the truth. In particular being ------- by the priests but it having pleased God of his infine goodness to give me a light of my error and hearty ------ for the same and to lay a ------------- on me. Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm Porter’s Jnr John Woodson, Joseph Pleasants and John Atkinson are appointed to goe to the Yearly Meeting to give are ----- how things stand as to the affairs and proceedings of this meeting.

Whereas it hath been declared to this meeting that Thomas Standley hath been grieviously overtaken with drunkenness it is therefore desired that Robt Hughes and Jno Atkinson got to the sd Standley and desire him to come to the next Mo Meeting held here to give the meeting satisfaction for the disparagement of the truth he professeth.

It is the advice of this meeting that the meeting book be lodged at the house of Joseph Pleasants till there be a new book provided without some extraordinary occasion happen.

Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm Porter’s, Jnr the 19^th of ye 8^th mo 1706.

John Atkinson was chosen to take the collection in New Kent which aforesaid to be taken by G. R. Elyson whyo hath delivered up the stock with the account how the ------- were --------- of and is therefore discharged.

The reports of Robt Hugh & John Atkinson who were desired to goe to the Standley’s to discourse him about his drunkenness and to desire him to come to this meeting was that he ---- the fact and was sorry for it but he would not come to this meeting neither could he give any further satisfaction to the meeting honored friends are still ------ till the next Mo Meeting. To see the further life and conversation of him and ------------ or no he will then give the meeting satisfaction for his disparagement of the truth he professeth and Robt Hughes and G. R. Elyson goe to him-tell him that Friends do intend to disown him without he doth return and amend his life and make the meeting satisfaction as abovesd and --- desire him to be at our next Mo Meeting.

At this meeting was a parcele of books brought which were sent from Friends in London and it is understood that they be equally divided amongst the three weekly meetings that is today at Curles, New Kent and Old---- Creek - -------------------------.

At this meeting was two friends appointed in each of the three weekly meetings belonging to this meeting. To inspect into the affairs of whether any friends are disorderly in not coming to meeting and sleeping in meeting or any other ways demeaning themselves. These ------ friends be appointed goe to ------ and ----- the danger before them and if they return it is well if not then take one on ----- but if they ------ to hear them then to being the ----- meeting that they may be delt with ---- to go ------- ------ among Friends. Thomas Standley coming to this meeting and sayeth that he owns the crime of drunkenness and is heartily sorry for it but friends are resolved to wait to see his further life and conversation before they receive him into fellowship and if his life ------- what his tongue saith then they are willing to own him again.

Att this meeting was money gathered which is entered in the Book of Accounts belonging to this meeting.

At this came Edwd Hughes and his wife as desired by the last meeting and it is the advice of this meeting that the sd Edwd Hughes forthwith remove the woman and her youngest child that hath caused the disturbance between him and his wife until which be preformed friends cannot alow him fellowship and unity with them in their religious worship.

Whereas Edwd Mosby hath of long time absented himself from this meeting although ------- to come to it by Wm Porter and Henry Watkins Jnr being the overseer of Curles Meeting but he still neglecting to come. This meeting hath appointed other two friends to goe to him to know his reason for his not coming and also to ------- him to come to our next Mo Meeting there to give reasonable satisfaction for his thus absenting himself from the Society of Friends and from coming to meetings the two friends appointed are Cphrm Gartright & Rich Ferris.

Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm Porter’s Jnr the 17^th of the 4^th Mo 1710

Tarlton Woodson and Urslah Fleming came to this meeting and proposed their intentions of marriage taking her by the hand publickly in the Mo Meeting and saying Friends through the assistance of Almighty God I intent to take this my friend Ursulah Fleming to be my wife and likewise in the sd meeting the sd Urslah Fleming in like manner said Friends through the assistance of Almighty God I intend to take John Woodson to be my husband.

John Pleasants, Joseph Pleasants, Joseph Woodson Jn. Wm Porter Jnr, John Crew, Henry Watkins Jnr. Nich. Hutchins and Wm Lead are of opinion that first cousins ought not to marry for the scriptures saith ------ that none shall approach to any that is near a kin to him or the remainder of his flesh.

G. R. Elyson, Robt Hughes, Robt Woodson, Benja Woodson, Richd Feris, Edwd Mosby, Charles Fleming, John Woodson & John Atkinson are of the opinion that first cousins may marry having ------ by the Laws of God and ------.

Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm. Porter’s Jnr the 15^th day of ye 5^th mo 1710.

Tarlton Woodson and Urslah Fleming came to this meeting afsd professing their intentions of marriage the second time in taking her by the hand saying, Friends I intend through the assistance of Almighty God to take this my friend Urslah Fleming to be my wife and she in like means in the same meeting saying Friends I intend through the assistance of Almighty God to take this my friend Tarlton Woodson to be my husband.

The sd meeting have some doubt thereon some friends were against the sd proceedings but the -------- being put whereof the sd Tarlton Woodson & Urslah Fleming were contracted by solemn vows and contracts being then ignorant of any advice or practice among friends that first cousins shall not mary therefore better be suffred than dissolved therefore. It is the sence of this meeting that they may have liberty to take each other in marriage when they shud think fitt.

Whereas Tarlton Woodson son of John Woodson of the County of Henrico in Virginia and Urslah Fleming daughter of Charles Fleming of New Kent County having declared their intentions of marriage before several publick meetings of the people calld Quakers. In ---- according to the good order used among them where proceedings therein after a deliberate consideration thereof with regard to the right from Law of God recorded in the scriptures of Truth is such cases was approved by the sd Meeting. They appearing clear from all others and having the consent of parents and friends can ----- therein. Att this meeting it was thought fit that this meeting should be held on the same day as the meeting for worship is held that is the sixth day afsd. After the first full day in every month but some maters of debate an-ing because New Kent Friends were not here it is therefore the sense of this meeting that the New Kent Friends have notice thereof and if they have anything against forsd being of the sd meeting that then it shall be tabled to be ---- forsd amended continued or to be made ---- according to the sense of the sd Meeting.

It was proposed at this Meeting to have Curles Meeting House covered and it was referd to the next meeting.

Whereas John Crew was appointed clerk in Jno Atkinson’s stead by the last meeting G. R. Elyson was requested by the meeting to ask John Atkinson for the Meeting book. John Atkinson coming to this meeting and teling the meeting that he would not deliver the books until the same members of the meeting that put him in be there to take him out. This meeting therefore desires to give notice to one another to be at the next meeting to hear what the sd Atkinson shall say and do herefor the meeting appoints G. R. Elyson to desire Samll Jordan to be at the meeting to put an end to the difference between them if it may be.

Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm Porter’s Jnr the 10^th day of ye 6^th Mo 1711.

This meeting taking it into consideration thihnks fit to continue the order made the 8^th of ye 4^th mo last concerning the removing John Atkinson from being Clerk afsd appointing John Crew in his stead and do order that the sd John Atkinson do bring or send the books and papers relating to this meeting to our next Monthly Meeting held here. John Atkinson refusing to bring or send the Meeting Books and papers. To one matter Meeting held here this Meeting therefore have appointed Robt Hughes & G. R. Elyson in order to receive those books and papers some time between thihs and the next Mo Meeting. To whom the sd Atkinson hath professed to deliver them.

Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm. Porter Jnr the 7^th day of ye 7^th mo 1711.

At this meeting Robt Hughes and G. R. Ellyson delivered the Meeting Books the aforesd John Atkinson and they are put into the custody of John Crew the appointed Clerk.

According to the former order John Pleasants, John Crew, Henry Watkins Jnr and Wm Lead or any two of them are appointed as representatives of this meeting to give acct to the Yearly Meeting how things stand as to the aforesd of this meeting.

Whereever complaint is made to this meeting that John Atkinson and Samll Jorden are not in unity with -------- and it ------ on the former difference. It is therefore the sence of this meeting that G. R. Elyson & Robt Hughes goe to the sd John Atkinson & Samll Jorden and request them to be at our next Mo Meeting in order to be reconciled and be in unity one with another.

George Bates and Grace Fleming did at this meeting profess their intentions of marriage and the sd Bates produced a note from under the hand of the young womans parents that it was with their consent.

At this meeting Robert Elyson and Sarah Crew proposed their intentions of marriage the first time. Samll Jordan and John Atkinson are appointed to give their report concerning the young man as to his clearness and Mary Howard and Sarah Crew to give their report of the young woman.

It was proposed to this meeting that it be removed once a month to the meeting house at Curles the next to Clear Creek Meeting House and the third to Wainoak Meeting house which is refered to the next meeting for consideration.

Att a Mo Meeting held at Wm Porter’s Jnr the 7^th day of ye 11^th mo 1714.

The persons that were appointed last meeting to enquire into the clearness and conversation of Robt Elyson and Sarah Crew gave their report to this meeting that they know nothing to the contrary but that they are clear from all others on acct of marriage. They were therefore informed to proceed in their aforesd intentions who did at this meeting publish themselves the second time according to the order of friends.

Att this Meeting Wm Porter was discoursed concerning his disorderly proceedings in the marriage of his daughter and is refered to the next Mo Meeting to be whet------ he will make the meeting satisfaction and if he refuseth then the meeting to proced against him in moving the meeting from his house.

Att this meeting the representatives of the Weekly Meetings viz. of Curles, New Kent, & Wainoak were ordered carefully to proceed. In the case of affairs of the meeting and duty to make xpert there of to the Mo Meeting. This meeting was attend by the ---- friend Wm ----------------- and James Graham from Old England and Matthew Pritchet from North Carolina. The persons appointed by last Mo Meeting to inquie into the clearness of Edw Mosby and Mary Watkings make return to this meeting that theye find nothing to the contrary but that they are clear from all other. Theye were therefore suffered to proceed in their intentions aforesaid who did at this meeting publish themselves the second time according to the order of friends and had leve to take a ------ ther when they and their friends see convenient.

At this meeting John Crew Jnr and Agathy Elyson did publish their intentions the first time of taking each other in marriage. The young man being desired to produce a certificate from the meeting he belonged to of his clearness and Susannah Fleming & Elizabeth Jorden are desired to inquire into clearness of the young woman & then report to our next Mo Meeting held heare.

Where as Edward Mosby of Henrico County and Mary Watkings widdo of Henry Watking deseased have for a posed their intention of marrig before two monthly meetings of the people called Quakers who after due inquiry of there clearness & its appearing to them that they were cleare from all others on acct of marige and thereto the relation of the sd Ewd. And Mary is are consenting to their marage did give consent that the sd partyes might accomplish their sd intentions.

They therefore are to certify all whom it may concern that the sd Edward Mosby & ye sd Marye Watkings did at a publick meting of people aforsd and in the aforesd county The fifteenth day of the ninth month 1716 held at there meeting house neare Curles then & there take each other as husband and wife he the sd Edward taking her the sd Marye by the hand & declaring that in the presence of God & sight of this contregation of people I take Mary Watking to be my ----- wife promising to perform all the Christian duties due from a husband to a wife and she the sd Mary then and there likewise declaring that in the presence of the Lord I take Edward Mosby to be my husband promising to be a tru and lawful wife to him till deth and for the confirmation the sd Edward Mosby & the sd Marye Watking did set to their hand and us whose names are written are their witnesses.

James Magahea and Rebecka Priest did at this meeting publish their intentions of taking each other in marige the second time did there upon by the reporting of John Johnson and Benja Johnson who were appointed by the last Mo Meeting to inquire into the young man’s clearness & which was satisfactory, doe allow of their taking each other and to are left to their liberty for the accomplishing their sd intentions.

Elizabeth Johnson and Margery Jonson who were appointed to inquired into the young woman’s clearness, & not being there their husband also named did in their behalf give a satisfactory out coming her. Wm. Elyson & Agnis Johnson did publish their intentions of taking each other in marriage the second time.

Wm. Lead & Robt Crew who were appointed by the last meeting to inspect and make enquiries into Wm. Elyson’s clearness & did at this meeting give their report much of which was to friends satisfaction.

The woman’s friends as were appointed to inquire as about sd into Agnis Johnson clearness not being theare Mary Magahe being one of the above women did send word by Samll Magahe which was satisfaction ye Margery Johnson the other not coming, we had no information from her but in as much as the young woman being generally known by friends to be cleare in relation to marriage and to be in unity of friends this meeting has ----- fot to leave them to their liberty for the accomplishing of their aforesd intentions.

Whereas Wm Elyson son of Gar Robt Elysone of New Kent County and Agnes Johnson daughter of Johnson of Hanover County having declared their intentions of taking each other in marriage before severall publick meetings of the people called Quakers in Virginia according to the good order held amongst them whose professing therein after a deliberate consideration with regard to the righteous law of God were approved by the Weekly Meeting. They appearing cleare of all other in relation to marriage and having consent of parents and friends consent. Now they are to certify all in whome it may concern that for the full accomplishment of their sd intentions this 5^th day this 11^th mo 1722 they the sd Wm Elyson and Agnis Johnson appearing in a publick meeting of the aforesd people & others met together on that occasion at the publick meeting hous of the aforesd people and in a solemn manner he the sd Wm Elyson taking the sd Agnis Johnson by the hand did openly declare as followeth In the presence of God and this meeting I take Agnis Johnson to be my wife promising with God’s assistance to be a faithful & loving husband till deth and then and their in the sd meeting the sd Agnis Johnson did in like maner declare as followeth in the presence and God and this meeting I take William Elyson to be my husband promising with God’s assistance to be a faithful and loving wife till deth. This meeting was attended with the ministry of our friend Joseph Jordan and John Knox.

In order where unto these friends are appointed Viz. G. R. Elyson, Joseph Pleasants, Tarlton Woodson and John Pleasants. After which if no further satisfaction apeares to Friends concerning him then at a the next Mo Meeting a paper of writing to be given forth as a testimony against him.

Whereas Wm Porter a pretended member of the Society of the peopell called Quakers hath (sum time past bye his wicked and ungodly actions brought a reproach & a scandal on the B Cased truth professed by the aforesaid peopell In that he the sd Wm Porter has taken a wife not of the society of the sd peopell Which many attended to the effect ----- and -------- -------------------------------- friends of that society to deal with him according to the good order of the gospel established among the sd peopell ---------- orderly --------------as apeares by the records of our Mo Meeting. Now in as much as the sd Wm Porter still refuses to vindicate his sd being as appeared by the answer he gave those friends appointed to deale with him as aforesaid when he -------- that at to his taking his wife it is already mentioned if it was to do again he would do it, as all of his refusing to condemn his said practice in a publick manner. In the Mo Meeting -------- has been practiced in the like accaton. Now that the like scandal for the tutor may be presented, we whose names are under written doe in behalf of the afore said peopell and the pure truth professed by them disown and deny the sd Wm Porter to be a member of our religious society until such time as it may please the Lord to give Him a ----- of his outgoings and that he may finde a place of repentance to the amendment of life. Wherewas Joseph Crew son of John Crew of Charles City County and Massey Johnson daughter of John Johnson of Hanover County having declared their intentions of marriage before two severall meetings of the sd peopell called Quakers in Virginia according to the good order granted a -------------- them whose proceedings in therein after a deliberate consideration to the rituous law of God were granted by the sd Meeting in relations to marriage and having consent of parience and friends concerned. Nowe these are to certify to all whom it maye concern that for the full accomplishments of their sd intentions this twelfth day of the sixth month in the yeare one thousand seven hundred and twenty five that the sd Joseph Crew and Masseye Johnson appearing in a public meeting of the aforesd peopell and other at the meeting house of the sd peopell in Hanover County and in a solemn manner he the sd Joseph Crew taking the sd Massey Johnson by the hand did openly declare as followeth in the presence of God and you my witnesses this day I take Massey Johnson to be my wife. The paper ordered by this meeting to be ----- testifying against James Johnson taking a wife not professing with him was read and approved and signed in this meeting and ordered to be recorded in this meeting book as followeth.

Whereas James Johnson late a member of our Society hath taken a wife not professing with him to scandal of his profession and evil example of others of the young and rising generation with derogation from that principale of truth which had he bene obedient unto the manifestation thereof wold have protected him from evil and directed him to walk as becom the truth professed by us the people called Quakers. Wee therefore whose names are underwritten for and in behalf of the peopell aforesaid and the holey profession they make of Christ and Christianity do testify against the said James Johnson as a person wholly disowned and out of unity with us until/if happily it may be the Lord’s will, he comes to show repentance of his said evil committed which is desired he ----.

At A Monthly Meeting held as usuall in Henrico County ye 2^nd of 11^th mo 1741.

Good and comfortable acct read and given to this meeting by the serveriale of our Friends of the meetings except New Kent where there is sum matter of diference amongst sum friends. Which the overseer John Elmore with David Johnson are to endeavor to reconcile which it they cannot doe they are to let the next monthly meeting know it, and have a true relation thereof that friends may reconcile them.

It was reported to this meeting that the marriag of Benj Jordan wth Lydia Pleasants was managed orderly and in a decent manner.

At A Monthly Meeting held as usuall in Henrico County ye 6^th of ye 12^th mo 1741.

Samuel Magahe one of the overseers of the Swamp Meeting inform this meeting Margery daughter of John Johnson of the aforesaid meeting that not withstanding the council and admonition of her father and other friends of that meeting has lately taken a husband ----- the Preast.

It is therefore the sence of this meeting that she be cont. against as in sutch case asis usuall and as the discipline of truth calls for.

Persuant to an order of last month’s meeting whereas a paper drawn read and signed in this meeting against Margery Johnson daughter of John Johnson for taking a husb and not of our Society which paper was approved and ordered to be seconded.

Good and comfortable account was given in this meeting by the overseers of the several respect--- weakly meetings.

Whereas Margery Johnson daughter of John Johnson not withstanding the council and advice of her father and others disparaging her from marrying not in the Society of Peopell called Quakers yet contrary the good councell given her has taken a husband by the preast not of us. These are theirfore written as a testimony against her and to cleare the truth of the scandale for and reproach by t------ had or my come thereto by the said act in marrying as aforementioned, heareby disowning her as a member of our religious society, she having by her own willfull and unadmonished doings given not ----tions to Friends to testify against her ----- ------- time as she by unf------ repentance acknowledge her fault which wee sincerely desire she may know and be ----able of, given forth from our monthly meeting ye 6^th day of the 1^st mo 1741.

It appearing to this meeting there is a diference between Tos Ladd Jnr and Robert Ellyson (concerning some Negroes for which ye sd Ladd had commenced a law sute against the said Ellyson, which was likely to be of pernicious consequence to the trooth & it’s prosperity. It is therefore right proper & is agreed on by the parties concerned that the said difference shall be referred to Tarlton Woodson, John Pleasants & Chas Woodson to settle between them in order to prevent the scandal as may arise therefrom and presire brotherhood between them a marke of Christianety & etc.

David Johnson and John Pleasants who were appointed by the last mo. Meeting to inquire into the clearness of Joseph Parsons in relation to marriage report that he is clear from all others in that relation and the woman that was then appointed to inquire into the clearness of Susanna Wooddy that she is also clear.

David Johnson and Robert Ellyson are appointed to attend the said marriage and make report to the next monthly meeting.

Wyke Hunnicutt, Robt Ellyson and David Johnson are appointed to represent this meeting to the Quarterly Meeting.

Rob Ellyson and Squire Johnson and their wives who were appointed by last meeting to inquire into the clearness of Robert Johnson and Sarah Ellyson in relation to marriage report they are clear from any other Ingagements of that nature as far as they know or believe and having consent of parents yee friends concerned and nothing appearing to obstruct they are admitted to proceed the second time to publish their intentions of marriag, and are left to their liberty to consummate the same when they please. Robert Ellyson and Squire Johnson and their wives are appointed to attend the marriage and make report to the next Mo Meeting.

By acct given unto this meeting by the Friends appointed thereto things were quietly ordered at Rob Johnson’s marriage.

Whereas Robert Johnson son of Benjamin Johnson of Hanover County deceased and Sarah Ellyson daughter of William Ellyson of New Kent County having declared their intentions of taking each other in marriage before several publick meeting of the people called Quakers in Virginia according to the good order used among them whose proceedings therein after deliberations -------- with regard to the righteous law of God where approved by the said meeting in relation to marriage and having consent of parents and Friends concerned. Now there are to certifie all whomj it may concern that for the faithful accomplishment of their said marriage on the 7^th day of the 7^th month in the year one thousand seven hundred & fifty one, they the said Robert Johnson & Sarah Ellyson appearing in a Publick Meeting approved for that purpose of the aforesaid people aforesaid at the House of William Ellyson of the above said County of New Kent & he the said Robert Johnson taking the said Sarah Ellyson by the hand did openly declare as follows. You are my witnesses this day that I take this my friend Sarah Ellyson to be my wife promising with divine assistance to be unto her a true and loving husband until death separates and then and there in the said assembly the said Sarah Ellyson having the said Robert Johnson by the hand did in like manner declare as followeth…You are my witnesses this day that I take this my friend Robt Johnson to be my husband promising with divine assistance tobe unto him a true and loving wife until death separates. And the said Robert Johnson and Sarah Ellyson his now wife as a further confirmation did then & there in their behalf set their hand and we whose names are hereunto subscribed being present amongst others at the solemnizing of their said marriage and subscription in manner aforesaid in witness have also subscribed our names the day appearing above within.

This meeting was informed that John Watkins a friend belonging to Gravelly Run Meeting has for a long time been very disorderly by taking strong drink in excess notwithstanding sending representatives ----- asking to desist from so P------ a practice this meeting therefore appoint Benjamin Pattyson & Godfrey Fowler to visit him once more on the occasion and make report to next mo meeting.
