The Three Notch'd Road
(aka The Three Chop'd Road &
The Mountain Road)
From The Route of the Three Notch'd Road:
A Preliminary Report
by Nathaniel Mason Pawlett and Howard H. Newlon
This "road" connected Richmond with Staunton in Augusta County & the Great Wagon
Road.
The adjectives Notch'd & Chop'd referred to the three axe blazes made in the
tree trunks that lined the road.
John Woody's home was always on Bird/Byrd Creek. First in Goochland, then in
Albemarle in 1744, then in Fluvanna in 1777.
On this modern map, his home location is located very near the Three Notch'd
Road in northeast Fluvanna.
