  • Event-Misc*: 14 June 1844; Franklin Co., VA; Chancery Cause - Divorce: This chancery bill essentially concerned the disposition of a slave "Betty" that was owned by Siney Barnes before her marriage to Shadrack Barnes. Siney also stated that after their marriage she & Shadrack moved in with her mother "Anna"" & that Shadrack had since abandoned her. In his answer to the bill of complaint, Shadrack Barnes stated that "...the complainant had a child before she married this respondent." He also stated that the complainants's mother "Mrs. Sowder" had asked him to leave her home. Depositions were taken from several other people including Mrs. Anna Sowder, Synthia Sowder & John Sowder, but probably the most revealing deposition was made by Ezekiel Jones on or about Oct 7, 1844. Ezekiel deposed that he had asked Mrs. Barnes to return to her husband and that "She refused to go unless Branes would make over a negro girl she had to her son that she had by Thomas Helms before her marriage with Barnes. That she had no objection to Carnes (sic. Barnes) as a husband except that he would not convey the negro to her son Manuel." (DLW note: Parts of this Chancery Cause are difficult to read, but several items are apparent: That Siney was the daughter of Anna Sowder and that Siney had a child named Manuel by Thomas Helms before she married Shadrack Barnes. It seems that the issues were settled by Siney and Shadrack and the bill of complaint was dismissed at the May, 1845 court.)3
