George Woody1,2,3,4
b. before 1754, d. 1798
- Note: The assumption that George Woody was the son of Thomas Woody is based almost entirely on circumstantial evidence. The 1783 Amherst Co., VA census shows that George & Thomas were close neighbors and the 1785 Amherst Co., VA census shows George & Mary Woody, the widow of Thomas, were close neighbors. In both censuses, the surrounding families were latter associated with Goerge and his sons.
- Note*: The evidence for the three assumed children of George Woody, i.e. George Jr., Robert & William W., is circumstantial and based almost entirely on the marriages of the three men to Wrights. The parents and grandparents of Hannah, Matilda & Eliza Wright, the wives of George Jr., Robert & William W. Woody, were close neighbors of George Woody Sr. and Thomas Woody in Amherst Co., VA.
- Marriage*: Principal=Mary ?5
- Birth*: before 1754; The birth date estimate is based on George having five other people in his home in 1783. Assuming that 3/4 of these were his children, we posit that the first of these would have been born c 1774 and if George was c 20 when he married he would have been bc 1754. Since George paid tax in the first official post-revolution recorded taxation in 1782, he would have been at least 21 at this time. This would have placed his birth before 1761, so we are going to posit his birth date as 1754.4

- Note*: The basis for our research on the descendants of George and Robert Woody is a compilation done by Robert N. Grant. Robert did most of the research in Virginia, but Lillian Herrin did most of the research in Alabama. Madison Co., Alabama is one of the easiest counties in the U.S. to do online research, so we have confirmed nearly all of the compilation, adjusted a few things and added quite a bit of new research.4,5,6,7
