• Note*: The death certificate for A.L. Woody, b. Concord, VA, names Sarah Smoot, b. Concord, VA, as his mother & Archer Woody, b. Floyd Co., VA, as his father. The information was given by Archie's son, Kirkwood Lester Woody. Since Archie was with Margaret/Mollie Woody Hoback in the 1870 census, we are quite sure they were sibblings or half-sibblings. We now know that Wiatt Woody died Oct 1848. We do not know his birth date or parents, nor do we know what happened to Sarah Smoot Woody, but we are now quite sure that Wiatt H. Woody was not the father of Archer Lester Woody. This all leads us to theory that seems to fit the limited facts we know. The only other Arch* Woody that we know of in the period was Archer Benjamin Woody, who married Martha Engles Engles in 1860 & died in 1862 at Sharpsburg. If this was true & Sarah Smoot Wooody also died abut the same time, this would account for the unexplained appearance of Archer Lester Woody with his half-sister and her husband in 1870.
