• Note*: The Jackson Purchase region of Kentucky was acquired under the October 19, 1818, land treaty between the United States and the Chickasaw Indian Nation. This land now includes all the Kentucky counties west of the Tennessee River. On February 14, 1820, the Kentucky General Assembly passed legislation that established the public land sale system for the newly-acquired Jackson Purchase. Non-military tracts were sold by quarter-sections in Waidesborough & Princeton. Buyers were issued a receipt declaring the purchase price and tract location. Receipts were assignable and buyers could transfer quarter-sections by recording assignments on the back of the receipt. William Short was an obvious land speculator in that he acquired many receipts, patented some of the associated land, but sold many of the receipts to others. William's sons Josias & Franklin also participated, but not as speculators. Apparently, receipts were issued for a payment of the state stipulated price, then the receipts could be assigned to others for an undisclosed price. Thus, the final cost to the grantee was undisclosed and could have been the same, more or less than the original receipt price.⁶
