It appears that Rebecca did not have any children with Samuel and one daughter with William Rowlett. Thomas Short1,2
b. circa 1668, d. between 20 June 1740 and 21 October 1740
- Note*: It is likely that Abigail, the widow of Christopher Blackburn, was the first wife of Thomas Short. This assumption is based on the fact that Christopher left two young children in his will.
- Birth*: circa 1668; Old Rappahannock Co., VA; Estimated birth date based on Thomas being at least 21 when he sold land in 1689 and the marriage date, Mar 1666-Sep 1673, of his parents.3
- Event-Misc: 1 January 1689; Old Rappahannock Co., VA; Deed: Thomas sells to John Newton, 1000 acres that he inheirited from "Thomas Short, my father". Original patent to Thomas Short & Michaell Hugill dated May 26, 1666. On Sep 23, 1688, Thomas Short acknowledged a debt of 32,000 lb. tobbaco to John Newton of Westmorland Co. The 1000 acre sale of land on the north side of the Rappahannock River for 16,000 lb. tobbaco was partial payment of this debt.3
- Marriage*: before 1691; Essex Co., VA; Estimated marriage date based on the estimated birth date of Thomas Short III.; Principal=Abigail ?
- Event-Misc: 10 July 1694; Essex Co., VA; Probate: Thomas Short & wife Abigaile petitioned court regarding the estate of Capt. Xpher Blackbourn. Abigaile, "lately ye wife of Xpher Blackbourn, deced". (DLW note: First mention of Abigail, wife of Thomas Short.)4
- Event-Misc: 1704; Essex Co., VA; Land Tax: Thomas Short charged with 150 acres on Rent Roll.5
- Event-Misc: 1715; Essex Co., VA; Land Tax: Thomas was enumerated with 800 acres on the Quit Rent Roll.5
- Marriage*: before 17 February 1723; Essex Co., VA; Principal=Catherine Brown6
- Event-Misc*: 17 February 1723; Essex Co., VA; Deed: Tho Short to Charles Brown Jr., 50 acres, wife Katherine relinq dower, wit: Samuel Sallis. (DLW note: First mention of Catherine, 2nd wife of Thomas. Samuel Sallis is the only link I have found between Thomas & Samuel Short. Samuel Sallis was the 1/2 brother of Samuel Short. Charles was probably the brother of Catherine.)6
- Will*: 20 June 1740; Essex Co., VA; Thomas Shortt will: Sons: Will, John; Wife Katherine: Dau: Ann Golding, Eliza, Katherine, Sarah Ann, Susannah. Exec: William Short and Charles Brown.7
- Death*: between 20 June 1740 and 21 October 1740; Essex Co., VA7
- Probate*: 21 October 1740; Essex Co., VA; William Short & Charles Brown relinquished the estate administraton to widow Catherine.7

John Short1
b. before 1731, d. circa 1790
- Note: We have found some primary evidence connecting John Short to John R. Short in Franklin Co., VA. In addition, yDNA has proven that a descendant of John R. Short is related to the Shorts of Old Rappahannock. There are tax records for Randall John Short & Willaim Short in Fauquier Co., VA & tax records for John Short, Winney Short, Thomas Short snr., R. Thomas Short, John Randolph Short and William Short in Franklin Co., VA. Two of the children of William Short seem to be named for the John & Winiferd Short. However, we have not found a solid connection for Thomas R. Short & John & Winiferd Short, so it is possible that Thomas R. was the son of the Thomas Short, snr., found in the Franklin Co. tax records.
- Note*: There was a prominate Short family in King George Co. In 1785, Thomas & John Short were mentioned as only surviving sons of John Short and only bro of James Short, dec, late of London and only nephews of James Short of Middlesex, dec. in Scotland.
- Death:
- Birth*: before 1731; Essex Co., VA; Estimated birth date based on John being listed as a voting Freeholder in 1752. At least 21.3
- Event-Misc: 15 January 1752; Essex Co., VA; Election: "A Poll of Freeholders for Electing of Burgesses in Essex County" John & William Short listed. Both would have been at least 21.3
- Marriage*: before 15 September 1752; Principal=Dinah ?3
- Event-Misc*: 15 September 1752; St. Ann's Parish, Essex Co., VA; Deed: John sells to Sarah Short 150 acres he inheired from his father Thomas. Thomas originally purchased land from William Brooks and it was in possesion of John's mother Katherine at the time of the sale. Dinah, wife of John, relinquishd her dower. Wit: Susannah Short, Thomas Short, Edward Vawter. (DLW note: I assume that the witness Thomas Short was Thomas IV, since Thomas III was not mentioned in his father's will and presumed dead.3
- Event-Misc: 15 April 1755; Essex Co., VA; Deed: Sarah Short to John Short.4
- Event-Misc: 18 November 1755; Essex Co., VA; Deed: John Short to James Carroll.4
- Marriage*: before 4 September 1758; Estimated marriage date based on the mention of Winefred Short in the will of John Randall dated 4 Sep, 1758.; Principal=Winiferd Randall5,6
- Event-Misc: 18 October 1762; Essex Co., VA; Court Order: John Short was appointed guardian of his children Mary & Elizabeth Short. Security: Thomas Drake.7
- Event-Misc: 28 July 1766; King George Co., VA; Deed: John Short & Winifred, his wife, to David Pannell. 83 acres.5
- Event-Misc: 4 August 1766; King George Co., VA; Deed: John Short & Winnefred, his wife to Alexander Thom. 150 acres. #80. Adjoining: Monroe's Mill Swamp, Thomas Drake, John Edrington, Samuel Wood & David Pennell. Wittnesses: Thomas Drake, David Pennell, William Drake & Richard Drake.5
- Event-Misc: 13 October 1769; King George Co., VA; Deed: John Short & Winefred, his wife, of Pittsylvania Co. to George Stone of King George Co. One-half acre in town of Leeds. #5.5
- Event-Misc: 18 March 1771; Essex Co., VA; Court Order: "Ordered that John Short of Pittsylvania Co., eldest son and heir at law of Catherine Short, deceased, be summon'd to appear at the next Court to qualify as executor to the will of the decedent." Thomas Wise was granted a certificate to obtain letters of administration of the estate of Catherine Short.8
- Event-Misc: 1786; Franklin Co., VA; Personal Property Tax: John Short; 2,1. (DLW note: This enumeration would seem to mean that the John Short househld contained one male 16-21.)9
- Death*: circa 179010
- Event-Misc: 1790; Franklin Co., VA; Personal Property Tax: John Short; 1. (DLW note: (This is the last personal property tax record of John Short in Franklin Co., VA.)9

Elizabeth Virgett1
b. between 16 November 1705 and 1713, d. between 12 March 1750 and 19 February 1753
- Event-Misc*: Elizabeth is not mentioned in the wills of her mother's husbands: William Bendry or Job Virgit. But there was an 8 year period between Job's will and his death, so there was plenty of time for more children. Also, since William Short was a witness to the will of Susanna Meadows Virget Davis, the mother of Job Virget, I have assumed that Elizabeth was a Virget.
