• Note*: We have always wondered if there was a family name basis for Mitchell's name. The early Woodys were very traditional about naming their children and we have never found an ancestor named Mitchell in the lines of the Woodys or their spouses. However, recently we have uncovered a Michael Woody (and several variations) recorded some ten times as a Private in Peter Grant's Company in the Grayson Additional Continental Regiment. Michael seems to have enlisted for three years on 22 December 1777 and seems to have been discharged in 10 September 1788. He was recorded in White Plains, Paramus and Robinson Plains. However, in April 1779, this regiment was absorbed into Gist's Additional Continental Regiment. Gist and his regiment were captured at the Siege of Charleston in May 1780. We have not been able to find a record of the Gist troops and we have never found any additional record concerning Michael Woody; however, this record seems to leave open the possibility that Henry Woody had another son named Michael that did not survive until Henry Woody Sr. made his will.

• Note*: "The Tyree Tree with Angle, Byrd, Cook, Dillon & Woody Branches", edited by Dorothy C. Watts & published in 1978, is the only source that we are aware of for several of the following posited children of Randolph & Patience Woody: Ferdinand, Sally, Alice & Patience Woody. Mildred Motley Woody provided the information concerning the Randolph & Patience line. Marvin Raney acknowledged that he used the Watts compliation in his "Raney Collection", also published in 1978. With respect to Ferdinand, Sally, Alice & Patience, neither Mildred M. Woody or Marvin Raney provided any evidence as to the parents of these children or even so much as a guess at their birth dates. Although others have guessed at birth dates for these children, we can not find a sliver of evidence that these people existed, let alone when they were born. The 1820 census enumerates two younger females in the Randolph Woody household. The 1830 census enumerates one. The age brackets for the two females suggest that they were Permelia & Lucy. To us, it seems obvious that these two censuses do not support the assertion that the three females were daughters of Randolph Woody. Obviously, the two researchers could not identify the three females in the censuses either. The 1840 census enumerates two females in the 0/5 bracket and one female in the 20/30 bracket. Although very unlikely, it might be possible that the two young females were the daughters of Randolph; however, we think they were much more likely two of the children of Lucy Woody Zeigler, who died before 1840. Lucy's children are mentioned as inheritors in a 1845 Franklin County Chancery Cause. This chancery cause involved the distribution of Randolph Woody's estate after he died intestate. His inheritors were named in this cause. None of the four children posited by Mildred M. Woody were named in the cause. We do not know what evidence Mildred M. Woody had to suggest that Randolph Woody was the father of the four children, but we can find no evidence at all to support this assertion. If any or all were Randolph's children, they were dead before the 1845 chancery cause was finalized; however, we think it is possible that some or all could have been the children of other Woody families.^2,3,4,5,6
