• Note*: Jane Jenny Thompson was the proven wife of Joel Simmons, the proven mother of most of his children & the very likely mother of the remaining children. Jenny Simmons is mentioned in the Sep 26, 1787 will of her father Robert Thompson. Also, the Jan 11, 1817 will of Catherine Thompson, the widow of Robert Thompson, names daughter Jane Simmons. She also names Joel Simmons, son-in-law, as an executor. Therefore, Jane Jenny Thompson was alive from 1787 - 1817 and thus all of Joel Simmons children after Sep 26, 1787 were surely the children of Jane Jenny Thompson Simmons. Among these children was Thompson Simmons. Also, it seems that Joel & his wife named their first son Robert & this seems like additional circumstantial evidence that the mother of all of Joel's children was Jane Jenny Thompson. In addition, on Sep 30, 1823 in Lawrence Co., OH, David Thompson was granted a Power of Attorney by the heirs of Robert & Catherine Thompson. Joel Simmons was noted as an heir; however, Jane Jenny Thompson Simmons was not mentioned. This would indicate that she was probably deceased.
  Although we have seen claims that Joel Simmons married an Elizabeth McCorall/McCorkle, we cannot find the slightest evidence to substantiate this claim; however, Jane Jenny Thompson Simmons seems to have died before 1823, so this marriage is a very slight possibility. Most importantly, if true, Elizabeth was not the mother of any of Joel's children. We have also seen claims that this Joel Simmons married Barsheba Wright. It seems to be true that a Joel Simmons married a Barsheba Wright, daughter of Joseph, in Bedford Co., VA on Sep 13, 1806. It also seems that Barsheba Simmons next married Charles Craig in Bedford on Oct 17, 1841. However, since Jane Jenny Thompson Simmons seems to have been alive when her mother, Catherine Thompson, wrote her will in 1817, this assertion seems to be surely incorrect. So, we are virtually certain that Jane Thompson was the wife of Joel Simmons and the mother of their children. Even though we have found many atDNA matches with descendants of Joel Simmons siblings, we have never found an atDNA match with the descendants of one of Jane's siblings. This indicates that Jane was probably not the biological child of Robert Thompson or either of his wives.^2,1,3
