• Note*: According to some lineages, Stephen Mount is alleged to be the son of John Mount and Rachel Colvin. The main source of info concernig this John Mount is the following:*John Mount* served in the War of 1812. REF: Pension Record WC13518, New York Militia. In 1850, he was living at Bedford, Cuyahoga County, Ohio and in 1855 moved to Windsor, Eaton County, Michigan. He married (1) Rachel Colvin, who died during the birth of a child, (2) Edna Wood, who died Mar 1, 1844 at Bedford, Ohio and (3) May 25, 1844 at Bedford, Ohio, Ann Richardson. We have not seen an image or complete transcription of the original pension application, but it seems that John & Rachel existed; however, we can't find the slightest bit of evidence to that even suggests that Stephen was their son. However we have found a John, 78, NY & Anna, 63, Mounnt in the 1860 Eaton Co., MI census. They are living with Nelson Mount, 36, NY. Nelson looks like a son of John to us, but he has not be mentioned as such in any of John Mount's lineages that we have seen. Nelson was born c 1824 in NY, but Stephen was recorded several times as born PA.This is a problem for us and we have not seen one bit of evidence to connect Stephen Mount to John & Rachel Covin Mount and much of the supporting evidence contridicts this assumption.
• Note: The Belmont Co., OH marriage license for Stephen & Mary Mooney Mount includes a statement that Stephen had produced a written permission from is parents. So, it seems to us that his parents should be relatively near Belmont Co. at this time & this is where we concentrated our search. Belmont is in eastern OH & borders on the Ohio River. Across the Ohio is the northern panhandle of WV (VA until the Civil War) and across the narrow WV/VA panhandle are the western PA counties of Washigton & Greene. The census records for Stephen & Mary Mooney Mount indicate that they were both born in PA.The primary reason for the mass migration to eastern Ohio was the land grant laws passed by Congress. The land grant details are part of the U.S Bureau of Land Management (BLM) - General Land Office (GLO) records. These records contain grants for Stephen, Edmund, Jacob & John D. Mount in the eastern OH counties of Belmont, Monroe, Noble & Muskingum counties. Also, Stephen & Mary named their first known child Athalia. Athalia is/was a rather unusual Biblical based given name, even in the 1830s. It seems that her namesake was Athalia Mount, bc 1817, the daughter of John & Anna McVay/McVey Mount. John & Anna McVay/ McVey Mount lived in eastern OH area mentioned above. John Mount was born in VA (now WV), but also lived in nearby Washington & Greene Co., PA. To reiterate, this area is directly across the Ohio River from the Belmont, Guernsey, Morgan, etc OH area where the Mount/Mounts families lived in the mid-1800s. Although we can't prove the connection, we conclude there is more than enough indirect evidence to assume that Stephen Mount was the son of John & Anna McVay Mount.

• Birth: 6 July 1809; PA; The 6 Jul 1809 birth date is calculated from the Lawrence County death record for Stephen Mount. The record gives a death date of 8 Feb 1873 and a death age of 63y, 7m, 2 d. However, neither of these dates are the same as those inscribed on the newer Stephen Mount tombstone. These are: 10 Jul 1815-16 Feb 1873). We suspect that this tombstone was erected rather recently. There exists an image of a much older Stephen Mount tombstone; however, we cannot read the dates. Since Stephen seemed to be younger than 21 when he married in 1833, the 1815 birth date seems the most plausible to us.^11,12

• Note: It seems that Martha Savage may have been the granddaughter of George Savage of Loudoun Co., VA. Several of George's sons migrated to the eastern OH at about the same time as the McCaffreys. Robert Savage seems to be the most likely father of Martha, However, there were Savages from western PA that lived in the counties close to the McCaffreys in eastern OH.

Nathaniel G. Smith^1,2,3

• Note*: Some family historians have alleged that the Nathaniel Smith that married Harriet McCormick was the son of Nathan & Rosanna Deming Smith who seemed to have lived in Morgan Co., OH. However, we have proved to our satisfaction that Nathan (died 1827, Morgan Co., OH) & Rosanna's son was Stephen Smith that married Susannah Martin in 1847 Delaware Co., IN. Their first son was Nathan R. Smith, born c 1850, IN & their third daughter was Rosanna Smith bc 1854, IN. Rosanna Deming Smith, Stephen's mother, died in Delaware Co. and other children of Nathan & Rosanna Deming Smith also moved to this area. At this time, our best guess at the father of Nathaniel G. Smith is the Nathaniel Smith (bc 1765) that was recorded with a large family in the 1830 Guernsey Co., OH census; however, we have discoverd almost nothing about this person.
• Note: Although several family historians allege that Nathaniel Smith was also called Stephen Smith, we have not seen one record that verifies this allegation. He did have a son Stephen and a grandson Stephen, so that may have the basis for this story.

If so, it appears that the parents of Nathaniel and Robert came from PA to OH between 1815 & 1824. On the next census page is Henry, 40, PA & Mary Smith, 39, PA and four children: Israel, 6, PA, Mary E., 5, PA, Melissa, 4, PA & Samuel, 2, PA. Henry may have been a brother to Nathaniel & Robert Smith. However, I have found no correlation with the names of their children.)¹
