The 1840 FL census enumeration for James Wooddy compares very well to the 1850 FL census. We conclude that the transcription of Betsey Tifford is in error.

  County and apprenticed himself to a shoemaker. After some years, the
  family in England forgave him and he was asked to return to England. He
  supposedly wrote back that he had taken the name of the man who taught
  him shoemaking and would not return to England. John Wooddy could have
  been that man as in the 1830 census there are boys who could have been
