• Note: yDNA has proven that a descendant of Nicholas Woody of Spartanburg is closely related to the Virginia Woodys. Nicholas was likely a son or, less likely, a grandson of Henry Woody of Spartanburg. The Woodys of early Spartanburg were closely connected with their neighbor George Rowland, supposedly from Henry Co., VA.
• Note*: The father of Nicholas Woody is unproven; however, he was undoubtedly a close relative of Henry Woody of Spartanburg Co., SC. He was most likely a son of Henry, but it is possible that he was a grandson. Henry was the only Woody enumerated in the 1790 Spartanburg census enumeration and was probably the eldest. In the 1800 Spartanburg census, Henry was enumerated as over 45, along with a William Woode. William Woode's 1800 census enumeration was: 3,1,0,1/1,1,0,1. In addition, other Woodys are also found in the land records of that time. They are: John, Samuel, Jesse and William Woody. Since Nicholas named his oldest son William Woody, the William Woode of 1800 might be a candidate for the possible father of Nicholas; however, the 1800 census indicates that William's oldest son seems to have been born some 10 years after Nicholas Woody, so we are confident in our assumption.
