Barbara ?1
d. after November 1779
- Event-Misc*: The circumstantial evidence strongly suggests that Barbara was a Sowell or the widow of a Sowell and closely related to George & Mary Sowell. Barbara was likely the daughter of George. George was an executor to the will of William Short. Also, on Oct 10, 1761, George Sowell sold the plantation where he was living to William Short. But I have seen nothing that directly links her to a Sowell or anyone else.

Thomas Short1,2,3
b. before 1741, d. circa 1790
- Note*: Thomas Short is mentioned only twice in the tithe and tax lists for Chesterfield Co. That was in 1762 & 1777. I find this to be excedingly odd. His brothers are mentioned many times. Perhaps he lived in another county, but in 1783, the church wardens of Manchester Dist., Chesterfield Co. took the resposibilty of maintaining the children of Thomas, so most likely he was disabled for many years before his death.
- Birth*: before 1741; VA; Estimated birth date based on Thomas being at least 21 when enumerated as a tithable 1762.5
- Event-Misc: 1762; Chesterfield Co., VA; Tithe List: Thomas listed by Wm. Byrd, Eqr.5
- Marriage*: 10 January 1762; Saint James Northham Parish, Goochland Co., VA; "Both of Maniken Town"; Principal=Ann Payne6,3,2,7

- Event-Misc: 3 October 1783; Chesterfield Co., VA; Parish Order: Church wardens of Manchester Parish to bind William, Sally, George & Royall Short, children of Thomas Short. (DLW note: Thomas must has been unable to care for his children.)9
- Event-Misc*: 1 March 1788; Chesterfield Co., VA; Notary Memo: Richard Booker notarizes the names of Thomas Shortt's wife & children in the family Bible. "This day Tho Short came before me and made oath that the above writing contains a true register of his childrens ages."7

(DLW note: The "estate" notation most likely means that the owner or estate administrator of this property did not reregister the property with the county clerk and/or tax collector. The date that the property of " Samuel Short, estate" was dropped from the tax rolls coincides with the apparent death of Samuel Short Jr. However, we have not found any conveyance document for this property.)

Mary Short1,2,3
b. 14 September 1766, d. after March 1830
- Event-Misc*: Many, many pedigrees have Isaac Robertson married to Nancy Short(t), daughter of Young Short. If so, then Nancy was a nickname used by Mary, because Young names his daughter Mary Robertson in his will. The marriage records of Chesterfield Co. also name Mary. This is important because Young Short also names daughter Nancy Short in his will.1,4

(DLW note: This church was founded July 25, 1790 as Cox's Meeting House. The name was changed to Spring Creek Church in 1792 and again to Bethlehem Church in 1855. However, the Bethlehem Church moved to a new location in 1893, but some members continued to meet at the old site which was known as Spring Creek Baptist Mission. This name of this branch was again renamed in 1900 and is now known as Central Baptist Church.)9

- Census*: 8 November 1850; Franklin Co., VA; In 1850, Reuben Short, 80, VA was living beside Thomas Barton, 24, VA, wife Ann, 25, VA, Sarah E., 2, VA, Jonathan W., 7/12, VA & Sarah Short, 60, VA. In next home was Susannah Barton, 60, VA . I do not know Sarah Short. The only Barton marriage I can find that fits is Thomas Barton to Ann Terry, Sep 21, 1847 by George W. Kelly in Floyd Co.. But I can't find any Short connection with Barton or Terry. This census enumeration also roughly fits one of the sons of James and Susannah Short Bartlett, but James & Susannah were enumerated in the Oct 1850 Georgia census. A total mystery to me.11

- Event-Misc*: Young W. Short from Chesterfield Co., VA and Laban Short from Mecklenburg Co., VA are both in the 1820 Lexington, Oglethrope Co., GA census. (indexed as Kyong W. Short & Lataurn Shust) Young was enumerated with 2m 10/16, 1m 45+, 2f 0/10, 2f 16/26, 1f 26/45. Laban was enumerated with 3m 0/10, 1m 10/16, 2m 16/18, 2m 16/26, 1m 45+, 2f 0/10, 1f 10/16, 1f 26/45. To my knowledge Young & Laban were not related, at least not closely related. Both Young and Laban were in VA c1800. I have not found either of them c 1810. On Jan 12, 1819, a Nancy Short was married to Jesse Starks in Olgethrope (transcription). In 1820, Jesse Starke/Starks was enumerated in Lexington 2 pages away from Laban and 12 pages away from Young. (41 pages total) In 1830 Oglethorpe, a similar Jesse Starky was enumerated. This couple supposedly moved to Jackson Co., AL and they show up in most Laban Short genealogies. This assumption may be correct, but I can not find any verification and the Jackson Co. couple's data is somewhat inconsistent. I can't assign Nancy to Laban or Young.
