• Note*: Although we have not found any direct/primary evidence that Gustavus E. Short was the same person as Emmett Mitchell Short, we conclude that there is enough circumstantial evidence to accept this assumption. However, there are two bits of evidence that detract from this assumption. Emmett's recorded birth date on his Idaho death certificate and tombstone is 4 Dec 1856; however, in the 1860 Floyd, VA census, Gus's father was apparently single and without children. However, birth dates on death recordings are always suspect. Stranger, and even more inexplicable to us , is that on several censuses, Emmett's mother was consistently enumerated as being born in France. Several primary records indicate that Gus's mother and her parents were born in Virginia. On the other hand, while Gus was not with his parents in the 1880 Floyd, VA census, he was with them in the 1885 Labette, KS State census. This is positive because Emmett was apparently married in Kansas or nearby Iowa. Also, we have not found an Emmett Mitchell Short, or such, in any census or record before the 1900 Des Moines, IA. So, while others have ignored the negative evidence, we think that this is a rather close call and that this situation is a perfect place for yDNA testing and analysis.

• Event-Misc*: I have no proof that Deborah was the daughter of Joseph Nix Short. A D. C. Short did marry Eli Smith in 1858, however, Deborah was not enumerated with anyone in the 1850 census. In 1860, a Deborah was living with Eli Smith and they had the children that were enumerated with Eli & Rachel Smith in the 1850 census. She could have been the daughter of one of Joseph's brother. However, in 1870 Floyd Co. census, Eli and Debby were living beside Elkannah & Judith Hatcher. Judith was a daughter of Joseph Nix Short, so this is enough circumstantial evidence for me.
