• Event-Misc: 1793; Adair Co., KY; William Casey, the militia commander, along with John Reynolds, Isaac Butler, William Butler, John Harvey, Francis Pelham, Henry Rennick agreed to hire & pay Arthur Hopkins to teach school for one year at Casey's & Butler's Stations. They later paid Hopkins #24 by "giving to him orders upon Casey for the amounts due them for their services as spies upon the Indians". Casey, in turn, satisfied the debt to Hopkins by conveying land to him.
  (DLW note: This weird arrangement shows that all of these men knew each other & that they were paid for spying on the Indians. With the exception of his death, almost nothing else seems to be known about John Reynolds; however, both Simon & Owen McCaf* were involved in his estate settlement. We think that one or both of these McCall* may also have been Indian "spies". We also think that John Reynolds may have been married to an unknown daughter of William McCaffrey & that she & John were among the relatives that helped raise the McCaf* orphans."

Names mentioned in sales: Simon McCafferty, Isaac Butler, James Young, Hugh Douglas & William Casey. Jan 1811: "The forgoing inventories and receipts of the estate of John Reynolds Decd was returned into court by William Casey and ordered to be recorded" Jan 1811 (DLW note: What an unusual record. It was filed by Casey about 9 years after the inventory occured. Simon does not seem to be in the 1802 tax records for Green or Lincoln. In 1844, Zachariah Holladay told Lyman Draper that John Reynolds was murdered by Chief Doublehead near Wm Casey's fort in 1793. Some 50 years after the event, Holladay recalled some interesting details. He relates that a fime horrse, a rifle, 20 lb lead, 10 lb powder & about 500 dollars were taken by Doublehead. How & why did Holladay known these details. $500 was a samll fortune in 1793. This event is probably connected to the Indian spying story & the McCaffrees were somehow involved.)
