(DLW note: This transcription illustrates the value of record images instead of transcritpions. W.H. Koontz was without doubt William Henry Koontz, the son of Joseph A. Koontz. He was probably the "informant" for the infomation on the death certificate, but without the image, we can't be sure. We can be sure that W.H. was not the spouse of Joseph. In addition, we can't know if the misinformation is a transcripton error or the result of confusion on the part of the distressed informant. All this calls into question the assertion that a "King" was the mother of Joseph, but without the image, we are mistified. Joseph's mother died when he was about ten and Joseph's son was apparently the informant, so these factors probably contributed to the error. At any rate, there is no doubt that Joseph Asbury Koontz was the brother of James H. Koontz and both were the sons of Henry Koontz. Henry did not marry his 2nd wife, Narcissa Naylor, until Oct 9, 1845, so Frances McCaffrey was almost surely the mother of Joseph. In fact, it is quite possible that she died from complications associated with Joseph's birth.)^3,4

This would usually mean that Hugh had diied, removed from the county or was infirm. He was involved in several court cases between 1768 and 1770, so he had not died or removed until c1771. We assume that he was considered infirm after1768 and we are guessing his death as c 1772.

I cannot find any record of the division of the William McCaffrey Sr. real estate; however, if this 50 acres represented Margaret McCaffrey's widow 1/3 dower plus the William W. In our experience, most people did not report their male children as taxable until they were at least 17, 18, or even 19. In any event, this record would seem to indicate that William had a rather large family in 1783. He was last enumerated in Loudoun a year later; however, we have found no children or marriages later in Loudoun that seem to be connected to him. It is also possible that one or more children had already left the home. Males could join the military when thay were 16. Based on later events, we thinkk that Owen & Simon my have already left the home.)⁵
