  • Note*: The surname of Sarah, the wife of Samuel McCorkle has never been proven. Because of the McCorkles close association with he Buchanans in Augusta co., VA & especially, Green Co., KY, most researchers have assumed her surname was Buchanan. We think that assumption is very likely correct. The KY Buchanans were the children of John Buchanan of Augusta. John died in 1790; however, his 1776 will names wife Margaret and several children, but makes no mention of a Sarah Buchanan. Samuel Buchanan left Augusta c 1772 and moved to Washington Co., VA. He died in 1793 & left a will dated 1774. He named wife Martha and four sons, but he did not name any daughters. Samuel & Sarah McCorkle had a daughter Martha. For all this circumstantial evidence, we are assuming that the parents of Sarah were Samuel & Martha Buchanan.

    Jan 1811: "The forgoing inventories and receipts of the estate of John Reynolds Decd was returned into court by William Casey and ordered to be recorded" Jan 1811 (DLW note: What an unusual record. It was filed by Casey about 9 years after the inventory occured. Simon does not seem to be in the 1802 tax records for Green or Lincoln. In 1844, Zachariah Holladay told Lyman Draper that John Reynolds was murdered by Chief Doublehead near Wm Casey's fort in 1793. Some 50 years after the event, Holladay recalled some interesting details. He relates that a fime horrse, a rifle, 20 lb lead, 10 lb powder & about 500 dollars were taken by Doublehead. How & why did Holladay known these details. $500 was a samll fortune in 1793. This event is probably connected to the Indian spying story & the McCaffrees were somehow involved.) )4,5
