• Note*: The birth date & parents of Wiatt Woody have been assumed based on a small amount of circumstantial evidence. Wiatt died before the 1850 census & we cannot find any record of this important vital. However, his wife, Sarah Ann Smoot, was recorded as 38 in the 1850 census. We believe that we have sufficient proof that she was the daughter of Thomas & Palania Smoot & that two of her brothers were William H. & John T. Smoot. All of these Smoots lived in Amherst and William & John were married in Lynchburg & Amherst. William H. Smoot paid the burial expenses for Wiatt. Also, Mollie Woody, age 12, the daughter of Wiatt & Sarah, was living with William H. in the 1860 census. Mollie's age corresponds well with the recorded 3 Dec 1847 Amherst marriage of Wiatt & Sarah. So, Sarah was c35 when she married Wiatt, so we have assumed that Wiatt would be about the same age. We have searched the pre-1850 censuses for Amherst & nearby counties. The only candidate that we have found is the first son of Samuel & Sarah Flowers Woody, married 4 Dec 1816 in Nelson.. The 1820 Nelson census has Sam & 1 male & 1 female in the 0/10 range. We will assume the male was born c1818. The 1830 Buckingham census has 5 young males in sam's household & the 1840 census has 9 young males. Identification of these males has been difficult because most were out of Sam's home before 1850. We are fairly sure about the names of 4/5 of these males, but that leaves several unidentified. Based on the above discussion, we have assumed that Wiatt was Sam & Sarah's first son & was born c1818. This would make Wiatt c5 years younger than Sarah & would been a little unusual, but not without precedent.
