Samuel S. Woody^1,2,3,4,5

• Note*: We have been able to gather only meager circumstantial evidence about the parents of Samuel. In 1830, he lived very close to old Henry Woody in Buckingham Co. but in general, he did not seem to live close to the other Woodys in Buckingham. He was enumerated with property valued at $7000 in the 1850 Buckingham census. We understand that such a valuation meant that the enumerated person owned the land. His father wasn't Benjamin, so that leaves Henry or Samuel, or even Thomas. Henry Woody did not sell part of his land to Sam, as he did to his other three sons; however, he might have given or willed Sam the land. Sam entered the militia in 1814 Buckingham and he married his 2nd wife Mary Ann in Buckingham. But there seems to be another good choice for Sam's parents and they are Samuel & Elizabeth Cottrell Woody. Sam Sr. died about 1808, but in 1810 Elizabeth was enumerated with a two younger males. One was surely Richard C. Woody and the other was the right age for Sam Jr. Also, Sam Jr. seems to have named his 1st daughter Elizabeth. atDNA results seem to confirm these facts and assumptions.
• Note: 2013 autosomal DNA results indicate that a descendant of Samuel S. Woody is a 6th cousin (twice removed) of a descendant of Martha Cottrell Lively, the wife of Benjamin Lively. There were two related Martha Cottrells that were born about 1740: One Martha was the daughter of Richard & Martha Prible Cottrell. The 2nd Martha was the daughter of Thomas Cottrell, a cousin of Richard. We have seen no evidence that associates these two Marthas with their parents. The 6th cousin DNA match indicates that Martha Cottrell Lively was the daughter of Richard & Martha Prible Cottrell and that Samuel S. Woody was a descendant of Richard & Martha.

Before her marriage, her name was Mary Ann Woody and that her husband was previously married to Sallie Flowers. Her husband died in Buckingham on 20 February 1861 and that their residence was Buckingham. That her husband had received 2 land warrants in his life time...... (unreadable) Her residence is Buckingham, Buckingham, Virginia. Her post office address is Tye River (Station?) Nelson County. Witneses: Charles M. Fields, age 22 and Wm A. Scruggs, age 26, both residing in Nelson. Mary Ann's pension certificate was approved 9 Mar 1878 and her $8 per month payment was effective on that date. She was placed on the pension roll of the Knoxville, TN Agency. Her certificate states that Samuel Woody was a private in Captain Key's Company, Virginia Militia. Her certificate was dated 31 July 1880.⁴

• Note*: The identity of the parents of Elizabeth Woody is quite puzzling. Her marriage license names Mary A. Word as her mother and this only adds to the mystery. We suspect some sort of a transcription error, but the original source seems unobtainable. The 1850 Albemarle census shows an Elizabeth, age 16, living with Mary Woody, age 60. So, Elizabeth was born about 1834 and this is the birth year of the Elizabeth Woody that married Thomas Flowers Woody and she appears to be living with Mary Gardner Woody, wife of John Woody. But this does not account for the Mary A. Word mentioned as Elizabeth's mother on the 1855 marriage license. In addition, the 1840 Albemarle census for John Woody does not show a female that matches the birth date of Elizabeth. So we looked John Woody's sibblings and their children to see if we could find any clues that might indicate an adoption of Elizabeth. John sister, Sarah Woody married John Ward in 1810 and John Ward seems to have died or disappeared after 1820. A Sarah Ward appears in the 1830 & 1840 Albemarle censuses and her family profile is consistent with the 1820 census enumeration, except in 1840, a female in the 0/5 age bracket is enumerated. This female does not seem to be the daughter of John Ward and she has a birth date very close to the 1834 birth date of Elizabeth enumerated with Mary Woody in 1850 census and that of Elizabeth that married Thomas Flowers Woody. Sarah Ward appears to have died before the 1850 census. If so, this event would accout for Elizabeth being with Mary Woody in 1850 and if she was born out of wedlock, her surname would most likely be Woody, her mother's maiden name. Additionally, Elizabeth was enumerated as Sarah E. in the 1900 Albemarle census. Finally, the surname Ward could have been read as Word by the marriage license transcriber. So everything seems to fit except for the Mary A. part of the transcription. This is still a mystery to be solved if possible.
