• Note*: Apparently, Samuel Jesse Woody was named in the Bible of Melvin Woody, his son. "All of the children listed to Samuel were found in the Bible of A. Melvin Woody." Also, Melvin's son, Marion J. Woody related that Samuel Jesse had one brother & no sisters. The brother disappeared & was never heard from again. (DLW note: This is an extremely odd situation, since Jefferson Woody is named as the the person that married Martha McMahan in 1883 & Jeff/Jefferson Woody was enumerated in the 1900, 1910 & 1930 Swain Co., NC censuses. He was enumerated as Silas J. in the 1920 Swain census. The death certificates of Dollie (Woody) Gragg & Mary M. (Woody) Howard name S. J. Woody & Martha McMahan as their parents. There are no appropriate Jefferson or Samuel Woodys enumerated in the 1870 or 1880 NC censuses. There is a Jesse Woody, 10, enumerated in the 1870 census with Nancy Woody, the widow of Lewis Silver. However this Jesse was probably the Thomas Jefferson Silver enumerated with Lewis & Nancy in the 1850 census. Perhaps Jefferson/Samuel/Jesse Woody was enumerated in the 1870 & 1880 censuses using his mother's maiden name or his step father's name, but, if so, we can't find him. Jeff's father (married or unmarried) could have died in the Civil War. The legend of Sam Jess having only one sibling supports this possibility. Some clues: J. J. Collis (witness to Jeff's marriage license) was probably Jefferson Collis, the son of Mary Woody (daughter of Josiah Woody) & William Collis, who died in the Civil War. Creney (daughter of Jeff) was a very unusual name. She may have been named after Creany Woody, also daughter of Josiah Woody & wife of Silas G. Woody, who also died in the Civil War. If the family legend is discounted, another clue & possibility: In the 1900 Swain Co., NC census, Jeff & Martha Woody were enumerated living beside Neal & Christine Woody. Neal (Cornelius) Woody was the son of Jimeson Woody. However, taking the legend, census data and marriage info into account, I think the most likely parents of Jefferson were Wyatt (son of Josiah) & Elizabeth Collis Woody. They were enumerated in the 1860 Yancey census with a son Josiah, bc 1858. Wyatt died in the Civil War and Elizabeth remarried Riley Hall in 1866. Josiah Woody (bc 1858) seems to have disappeared from the 1870 census and all later censuses. Wyatt had a brother William who also died in the war. Wyatt also had two sisters Cearny & Mary, whose husbands died in the war. There seems to a marked similarity between the names in the families of Josiah Woody and Samuel Jesse Woody (aka Jefferson Woody). A yDNA test on a male Woody descendant of Jefferson/Samuel/Jesse Woody would most likely prove or disprove that he was the son of a Woody.)
