• Note*: It is our opinion that John Burnett, son of Isaac, was born & married a little earlier than is generally accepted. His birth date of 1760/1761 is estimated on the 1782 & 1783 tax listings for Hanover Co., VA. It has been our experience that early tax laws were treated much like the speed limits of today. By law, males should have been listed at age 16 until 20, usually with their father. At 21, they should have been listed alone. But this law seemed to be stretched quite a bit by nearly everyone involved. Both Cornelius & Crawford, sons of John, were census enumerated as born before 1775. This fact has been ignored by many because of the assumed birth date of John. Based on these enumerations & our experience with tax listings, we choose to assume that John was born & married a little earlier than the date based on the tax listings.

• Note*: The 1802 Franklin Co. marriage bond for Sally Anderson & David Ross states that Sally Anderson was daughter of John & John Anderson provided surety; however, we have never found any proof as to which John Anderson was the father of Sarah and there quite a few potential John Andersons in the area around Franklin Co. There is no John Anderson in the 1810 Franklin census; howerev a John Anderson was taxed there from 1799 until 1802 with with 2/3 other taxable males in his home.-Many have presumed that Sarah was the daughter of John & Mary (even Mary Wood) Anderson. We believe that this Mary Wood assertion comes from the book " The Garth Family...." by Rosalie E. R. Davis. Although she provides no evidence, she asserts that the parents of Sarah were John & Mary Wood Anderson. However, since there is a 1795 Franklin Co. marriage bond for David Ross & Mary Wood, we think that Rosalie simply got her facts mixed up. We cannot prove that the David Ross that married Mary Wood is the same person that later married Sarah Anderson; however. we think it is highly likely. It has also been presumed by many that this John Anderson was the rather famous Revolutionary War hero bearing that name and his wife was Rebecca Maxwell Anderson.This seems to just be a wishful guess based on the hero fame. The 1810 Franklin Co., census contains only one Anderson & that was James: 4,0,2,1,1,/2,1,2,1,0. Since most brides were married where there family resided, this James Anderson seems like a better choice for a connection to Sarah. Many presume that this James a died in 1822 with a will dated in 1821. He named wife Anne & sons Jesse, Joseph, Nelson & James; however, I suspect he was the James Anderson that was enumerated in the 1820 Champaign, OH census as 3,1,1,3,01/2,1,1,1,0 These 1810 & 1820 censuses compare very well. Later, James, the son of James Anderson of Champaign moved to Jasper Co., IN prior to the 1850 census. Jasper Co. is where John Anderson (1782-1868) & his wife Sarah and their son Otey & the rest of their children moved prior to the 1840 Jasper census. This John Anderson was also recorded as the father of Otey Anderson on his 1827 Franklin Co. marriage bond to Ann Stearman. John, his wife Sarah and their son Otey died in IN & are buried in the Newton Co., IN Pleasant Grove Cemetery. John died 1n 1868, age 86. Jasper & Newton counties are adjacent.Sarah died in 1840, age 56. Based on all these facts we posit that Sarah Anderson was the sister of John & James Anderson & that they were all the children of John Anderson Sr., born c 1730.^2,7
