Wyatt Woody

  • Event-Misc*: Some genealogies of the Wyatt & Mary Woody family include a Wyatt Woody Jr. and a Samuel Woody. While it makes sense that Wyatt had a son Wyatt Jr., I have never found a trace of him anywhere. However, the will of Wyate Woody, Senior would indicate that that a younger Wyatt did exist and the 1840 Yancey Co., NC census lists a male, born1810/1820, in the home of Wyatt Woody. All the other sons of Wyatt are accouned for in this census, so we posit that this male, bc 1818, was Wyatt Woody Jr. and he died before the 1850 Yancey census. His wife was probably Marinda, bc 1820, found with Wyatt Sr. in the 1850 census with two young males, George, age 2 & Hosea (Posey), age 5. The dates attributed to Wyatt Jr. and Samuel come from contributions to Heritage of the Toe River Valley by Lloyd Bailey and to the World Family Tree Vol. 2, #0258.

    The 1850 Yancey Co., NC census lists George (age 2) & Hosea (age 5) Woody in the home of Wyatt. These boys could have been the sons of Wyatt's daughter Marinda, who was also in the household or they could have been the son's of desceased son of Wyatt. I have never seen any evidence to identify their parents. Based on the 1850 & 1860 data, I have assumed that these males were the sons of Marinda, but because I have no evidence to contridict.

    The 1840 Yancey Co., NC census for the Wyatt Woody household lists a male, age 20/30. This male could have been Wyatt Jr. or Sam. The known children of Wyatt seem to be accounted for.
    I lean toward the assumption of at least one more son . This would be Wyatt Jr. I doubt very much that Wyatt Jr. lived to see the 1850 census.

Marinda (age 30) . I have assumed that these boys are sons of Marinda & Wyatt Woody Jy. In 1860 Yancey Co. census, George and Posey are in household of Elizabeth, whom I assume was Marinda. George named one of his sons Posey Evander. This is stong evidence that George and Posey (Hosea) above were brothers. In the 1880 census Marinda was enumeratd as mother in law in the home of James & Polly M. (Woody) Wyatt. The death certificate for Mary M. Woody Wyatt has "unknown" for her father and Woody for the maiden name of her mother.5
