• Note*: James Huff Jr. seems to have avoided the 1850 & 1870 censuses. He seems to be in the 1860 Wayne Co., VA census. He had five younger males & two younger females in the1830 Harlan Co., KY census enumeration. In 1840 Harlan, in addition to James & wife, there were 3 males & 3 females: 1m 10/15, 1m 15/20, 1m 20/30, 1f 5/10/ 1f 10/15 & 1f 15/20. The Harlan Co. records contain a marriage record of James & Ann Pennington in 1840; however, James' War of 1812 pension application recites a marrige to Ann Pennington/Pendleton in 1816. We think the oldest male was Isaac Huff, bc 1818. The oldest female was probably his wife Eilzabeth Lewis that he married in 1839.

• Note*: We have found evidence for two wives of Isaac Huff. The death certificates of his sons John W. & James M. Huff name Julia Morris & Elizabeth Clark as their mothers. Errors in death certificates occur sometimes because informants become confused about the "parent" information asked for. Sometimes the informant gives the name of his/her parent instead of the deceased's parent. However, this is the only evidence we have and we have seen none for any other posited wife. Several other wives of Isaac Huff have been posited by other researchers; however, we have not found any evidence at all to support these claims. We have not even found folk lore to support these claims. Some or all of these claims may be true; however, we would like to see the supporting evidence. The most widely claimed additional wife is Rebecca Hughes. The only evidence that we have found for this assumption is weakly circumstantial: The only known daughter of Isaac seems to have been Rebecca, but Isaac also seems to have had a sister Rebecca, so these facts seem to offset each other.
