- Event-Misc*: There is NO PROOF of the parents of David. He was in Bedford & Franklin Counties at the same time as Henry Woody and some of his sons. He was not recorded in Goochland, Albemarle, or Amherst. He was not in the will of Henry Sr. and he disappeared from the Franklin Co. tax lists after 1803. Henry Sr. died in 1807. He could have been a brother or cousin of Henry.
- Birth*: before 1770; VA; Birth date estimate based on David being first named on the tax list of 1791. However, he did sign a petition in 1776 and he should have been 14 to do that. so he could have been born a few years earlier. IF he was the son of Henry, his name and birth date may provide a valuable clue as to the father of Susannah Martin, since the name David is not found among early VA Woodys.2

John apparently received a land grant on Byrd Creek in 1732 & he seemed to have died after after 1762 for sure and it is quite possible that he died after 1776. His son, Henry, was married in 1761. Considering this evidence, we estimate his birth date to be c 1702. If this analysis is fairly accurate, John Woody of Goochland could not be the headright named in the 1701 land grant of John Pleasants.

- Note*: William & Henry Woody were associated with William Banks in Albemarle Co. VA circa 1760. That Nancy Woody Fullington, the daughter of William, named two of her sons William Banks Woody and John Small Woody eliminates the possibilty that the 1783 marriage was between William, a son of William Sr. & Jane Small or that Jane was the widow of a Small. Since William Banks Woody Jr. was bc 1800, well after the marriage of his father & Jane, he was probably named for his grandmother, the wife of his assumed grandfather, John Woody.
The Bible of Hervey Small mentions that Matthew Small had four sons and four daughters, one of which was Jane. But the Bible does not mention the marriage of Jane, nor can I can find a Small researcher that knows anything about William & Jane Small Woody after their marriage. The 1790 Tax Lists of Henry Co. show William Banks and Matthew, Thomas, John Sr. & John Jr. Small. The 1788 Franklin Co. Tax List shows Samuel, John & John Jr. Banks. William Banks Woody Sr. died in 1817 in Lincoln Co. TN. Matthew Small died in 1827 in Marion Co., TN which was two counties east of Lincoln, so it is odd that Willaim & Jane did not have a son Matthew. But perhaps they did and he died. However, William Banks Woody Jr. did name his first son Matthew, a name almost never used by the Woodys. - Birth*: circa 1740; VA; Birth date estimate based on the birth date of William's first child, Biddy, in 1765 and William's witnessing a deed in 1759.

- Note*: I can't find a suitable candidate for Jane in the 1820 Lincoln Co. census, so I cannot confirm her birth date. But, since Jane seems to have been much younger than William, she may have remarried before 1820. Or she may have gone to Marion Co. to be with her relatives. Or she may have gone to McMinn Co. to be with her brother William. There were no 1820 censuses for Marion or McMinn.
- Note: In 2011, Bobby and Carol Babin Estes alleged on FindAGrave that Jane Small Woody died in 1832 is buried near her father Matthew Small in the Willis H. Small Cemetery, Wildersville, Henderson Co., TN. (Actually, this cemetery appears to be in the Natchez Trace State Park in Carroll Co., very close to the Henderson Co. line.) Requests for photos of these tombstones have not been fulfilled. The cemetery is described thusly: "This is a small family cemetery within Natchez Trace State Park. The access drive is on the west side of Bible Grove Road about 1½ miles north of Bible Grove Cemetery and a few hundred yards south of Lovell Cemetery." This description is exactly the same found on the Henderson Co., TN GenWeb site. Here, a 1999 cemetery survey of the Small Cemetery is recorded. http://www.tngenweb.org/records/henderson/cemeteries/small.htm. Only seven Small tombsones were recorded: W. H. Small, his wife Martha Jane, & five of their children. Neither Matthew or Jane were among them. I can't find any connection between W. H. Small & Matthew Small. - Note*: Despite the recorded 1786 marriage of James Huff & Biddy Woody in Henry Co., VA, I can not find a Huff lineage that even mentions a James Huff in Henry Co., VA, let alone a James Huff & Biddy Woody marriage. Biddy Huff is also mentioned in the 1814 will of her father, William Banks Woody. However, I did find a James Huff, 83, VA & Obedience Huff, 83, VA in the 1850 Harlan Co., KY census. This is a perfect fit, but it is claimed that this is Obedience Koger. The source of this asseration seems to be a sketch by Emory Hamilton that is posted on the Wise Co., VA GenWeb site. Emory was a very respected Wise Co. historian, but it is a little odd that he does not mention the parents of Obedience. Nor can I find an Obedience Koger in any of the well researched Koger lineages of southwest Virginia. With all repect to Mr. Hamiliton, the primary evidence indicates that James Huff married Biddy Woody & that this couple removed to Harlan Co., KY.

- Note: The posited names of the sons of Dr. William Huff are almost totally based on the close proximity of these men in the 1850 Harlan Co., KY census and the number of younger males enumerated in earlier Harlan censuses.
- Note*: Many undocumented and very poorly documented lineages exist for the Huff families of Harlan Co., KY and vicinity, some with glaring unexplained inconsistencies. Very few wills and/or estate records seem to exist for these families, so most of the proposed early Huff relationships are mainly based on family lore and legends. Several people have made concentrated efforts to record the memories to the "old-timers" of their era. The most notable of these seems to be Robbie Fields Tanner, who documented her work as the Allied Families of Southeastern Kentucky (not in WorldCat or LDS library). She seems to have made use of the collected papers of Dr. Wilgus Bach (1887-1936), a noted Kentucky family historian and collector of genealogical data. A more recent serious Huff family historian is Glen Farmer, who has collected the family lore of his older relatives and also used the Tanner work as a reference. While his research is focused on the lineage of Charles Huff, another early resident of Harlan County, it is very useful because it helps eliminate many of the confusing possibilities. His research is at WorldConnect, keyword :2364992 & at Ancestry.com Family Trees as Farmer-Huff. However, Mr. Farmer contends that yDNA testing has shown that descendants of Charles Huff and Dr. James Huff are completely unrelated. Since William, James & Charles Huff are recorded in close proximity several times in pre-1800 western Virginia, this is an extremely unexpected situation to us. Also since it seems that only two descendants of William Huff have been tested, we cannot help but wonder if the yDNA differences are the result of an adoption of non-paternal event.
