  • Event-Misc*: Since, in 1804, Solomon Davis sold land in Franklin Co., VA described as "where Woody lives now" to John Woody and John & Prudence named one of their children Davis Woody, I think it is very likely that Prudence was a Davis. However, there is a legend that the surname of Prudence was Ely. This story is based on the name of her son, John Ely Woody. There is also a legend that Pudence was of Native American descent. However, IF Prudence was an Ely, I think it is very likely that she was the daughter of Thomas Ely or his oldest son, Thomas Jr., who died in the Revolutionary War. John & Prudence seemed to have named their first son Thomas which adds credence to this possibility. This Ely family were residents of Bedford Co., VA during the Revolutionary War, exactly where the Henry Woody family lived at this time. Ely is a very uncommon surname and this branch has been very well researched; however, a Prudence Ely is not mentioned. (DLW note: the 2 males in the 30/40 & 1 female in the 20/30 age range seem to be unaccouned for. William's siblings all seem to be accounded for in the 1840 censuses. I think these 2 males were likely other sons of Thomas Woody, who die c 1820 in KY. Two of these people were John H. & Mary Jackson Woody who married 7 Feb 1840 in Gasconade. The other male was probably Henry Woody who with his wife Ann C. sold their land in Franklin Co., MO in 1849. This land was inheirited from William Chiles & was sold to Franklin P. Chiles. I posit that Ann was the daughter of William Chiles & that they were the parents of William Samuel Woody and John H. Woody found in the 1840, 1850 & 1860 Franklin Co., MO censuses.11

  • Event-Misc*: There is disagreement & confusion about James & John H. Woody. Some pedigrees have James and/or John H. as sons of John & Prudence, but the Tyree Tree has them as sons of Thomas & Ann Hargar that "went west with relatives". In the 1850 Osage Co., MO Census, James & John were livng very close to the children of John & Prudence. I don't know which is correct, but the Tyree Tree has proved to be very accurate on other pedigrees. I can't find anyone in James' family after 1860.
