  • Event-Misc: I do not know the original source for the children that have been generally attributed to Mathias and Judith Woody Chitwood, but this linage has been copied and spliced onto many GedComs. Since I have found no reference to a will, court proceeding, Bible or pension papers that prove the children of Mathias and Judith, I decided to investigate the facts and assumptions that must have been used to create this linage. The 1850 Franklin Co.., VA census shows Judith, 65, VA with George, 34, VA, William, 25, VA and Julia, 23, VA. Mathias seems to have died before 1850. So this evidence strongly suggests that George, William and Julia were children of Mathias and Judith. The 1820-1840 censuses of Franklin Co. show that Mathias & Judith had seven younger males & two younger females that survived and resided in the Chitwood home over that period. The seven males and one female seem to be accounted for by purely circumstantial evidence in the 1850-1880 censuses of Kentucky. The most compelling aspect of this evidence is the 1860 Simpson Co., KY census which enumerates a Judia Chitwood, 65, VA living with Lee, 25, VA and Julia, 34, VA. Steptoe Chitwood, 33, VA & William Chitwood, 30, VA were also enumerated in Simpson Co., living fairly close to Judia. So the clan of Chitwoods in Kentucky appear to be the children of Mathias & Judith. On the other hand, the attribution of Shadrack Chitwood of Arkansas as a son of Mathias and Judith seems to have no factual or circumstantial basis whatsoever. This Shadrack is clearly shown in the 1850 & 1860 AR censuses as born c 1805 VA/ NC. This birth date was at least ten years before the marriage of Judith & Mathias. There is no one in the 1830 and 1840 Franklin Co., censuses of this age. The 1820 Franklin Co., census has a male age 16/26 that fits, but this male is clearly not the child of Judith and it is highly unlikely to be the child of Mathias. This person was likely a brother or other close relative of Mathias or even Judith, but we don't know his name. I would appreciate the help of anyone with information concerning this situation.
