• Note*: The marriage license for Stephen & Mary Mooney Mount includes a statement that Stephen had produced a written permission from his parents. So, it seems to us that the parents should be relatively near Belmont Co. at this time & this is where we concentrated our search. The primary reason for the mass migration to Ohio was the land grant laws passed by Congress. The land grant details are part of the U.S Bureau of Land Management (BLM) - General Land Office (GLO) records. These records contain grants for Stephen, Edmund, Jacob & John D. Mount in the counties of Belmont, Monroe, Noble & Muskingum counties. Census records reveal an older John & Ann Mount with a younger Athalia in the 1850 Homer Twp., Morgan Co. In the 1860 census for the same location only John & Athalia were enumerated. The 1840 census for Homer Twp., Athens Co. seem to show the same John Mount & family. Homer Twp. was taken from Athens to create Morgan Co. The Mountville Cemetery in Homer Twp., Morgan Co. includes tombstones for John & Anna Mount. Other researchers have identified Anna as Anna McVey who allegedly married John Mount on Nov 2, 1805. These researchers also include exact birth dates for John & Anna. We have not found any evidence of these marriage record or birth dates; however, such exact dates usually come from family Bibles or similar family records. These researchers have also identified the Edmund & Jacob Mount found in the grant records as children of John & Anna. In addition, Stephen & Mary Mooney Mount named the first child Athalia Mount. John & Anna also had a daughter Athalia, as did their son Jacob. We do not know the significance of this given name, but we do consider it strong evidence, since no other Mount line used it. Directly across the Ohio River from the Belmont, Guernsey, Morgan, etc. OH area was the narrow northern panhandle of VA (now WV). On the east side of the panhandle were Washington, Greene & Fayette Co. PA. where the Mount/Mounts families lived in the late 1700a & early1800s. The will of Edmond McVey of Washington Co., PA was witnessed by Saml Mount and names Anna McVey as a daughter of Edmond. The will of John Mount of Washington Co., PA names son-in-law Lemuel Fordice. A Samuel Forydyce assigned his land grant in Guernsey Co., OH to John Mount. Samuel was the alleged father of Lemuel. The McVays lived in in close proximity with the Mounts in Washington Co., PA. The Fordyces lived in adjoinig Greene Co., PA. All three families purchased land grants in the same area of eastern OH. We think that the above evidence indicates that John & Anna (McVey?) are very likely he parents of Stephen Mount.

• Note*: DLW note: To our knowledge, there is no proof of the surname of the wife of John D. Mount. Her given name, shown on the 1850 Morgan Co., OH census & transcribed from her assumed tombstone, seems to have been Ann/Anna. However, there is some strong circumstantial evidence that supports this claim. The 1814 Washington Co., PA will of Edmond McVay names Anna McVay as his daughter. This will was witnessed by Samuel Monunt & John & Anna's first know child was named Edmond. Samuel was likely the brother of John D. Mount.On the other hand, John D. Mounts first three childen were born PA. His oldest son, Edmond Mount was born c 1806, so why didn't Edmond McVay name his daughter Anna Mount in his will, as would have been customary. Also, John D. Mounts 1st known daughter was Athalia, bc 1817, OH. His sons Edmond & Stephen also had daughters named Athalia. Therefore, we posit that Athalia ? was the 1st wife John D. McVay & that at least his first 4 known childen were born to her. A careful study of the 1810-1850 censuses shows that this possibility may have occured between 1820 & 1830.
