• Note*: Some Butler reseachers opine that Polly McCaffrey was married to William Butler, a Revolutionay War figure and explorer. He lived in Green Co., KY in the late 1700s and and was recorded as age 44 when he entered the service in Green Co., KY as a Scout/Spy on 28 Apr 1793 & served 173 days. He is again recorded with John & Frances Butler & family as age 92, born VA, in the 1 Oct 1850 Trimble Co., KY census & was termed a "Soldier of the Revolution". Finally, his death is recorded as 22 Jul 1854, KY, on his Miltary Pension Final Payment Voucher. Evidence shows that Polly's husband was William Butler Jr., probably the son of William Butler, bc 1735. In 1798, the KY General Assembly enacted the legislation that created Cumberland Co. from Green Co. The home of William Butler Jr. used as a landmark to describe the boundry between the two counties. This is the exact area that James McCaffrey recorded a land grant on Sand Lick Fork in 1819. Also, Margaret Morgan McCaffrey Butler was enumerated in the 1840 census with several young children, the youngest appearing to be Kitt F. Butler, bc 1835 So, it is quite obvious that Polly McCaf* did not marry the older William Butler. The William Butler Jr. that she seemed to have married may have been the son of the older William Butler..^3,4,5,6

The boundry between Green & Cumberland was described in the enabling act as follows: "Beginning on the Warren line, a west course from the Marrow Bone Spring; thence east until it strikes the dividing ridge between the waters of Cumberland and Green Rivers, and with the same to the wagon road leading from Col. William Casey's to Burkesville, at the head of Rennick's Creek; thence eastwardry, so as to leave the settlement of William Butler, Junior, in Green County; thence to continue such a course as will leave the settlement of Greasy Creek in Green also; thence east to the Lincoln line; thence south to the state line, and with it to the Warren line; thence with the Warren line to the beginning. (DLW Note: Cumberland was formed from the southern portion of Green in 1798. In 1801, Adair was formed out of the southern portion of Green. Thus, the southern boundry of Adair abuted Cumberland. This is the exact location of James McCaffrey's land grant,⁶
