• Event-Misc: Oren Morton writes that James McCorkle of Montgomery Co., Virgina, came from Ireland to Staunton in 1770, then moved to Montgomery a few years later. He was sheriff in 1778 and a trustee of Liberty Hall Academy in 1783 . He had a brother William, whose daughters were Margaret, Martha and Rebecca. He died in 1794.
  
  Sounds pretty good, except for the part about coming from Ireland in 1770. I wonder where Morton got his info. He doesn't say.
  
  Consider these facts:
  
  The will of James of Montgomery Co. gave his considerable land holdings in Kentucky to his three nieces. Niece Margaret got all or some of 1000 acres (deed dated 8/16/1784 ) on Sinking Creek, a branch of the Green River in what became Green Co. On Oct 10, 1803, this land was identified as " James McCorkle's thousand acre survey and now known as William Adams land". This the exact area where Samuel Jr. & John McCorkle removed to from Virginia.
  
  In my transcription of the James' will (dated Feb 2, 1794; proved May, 1794 in Montgomery Co., Virginia) and subsequent proceedings, his partner of 1775, William Christian is named. James' nieces, daughters of his deceased brother William, are mentioned. The nieces are Margaret, wife of William Adams (8/9/1793, Montgomery Co.), Rebecca, wife of Andrew Thompson (5/11/1801, Montgomery Co.) and Martha. William's widow Martha is also mentioned. James had no other heirs.
  
  James McCorkle, son of Robert, lived in Montgomery Co., Virginia in the early 1800s. He was in the 1810 Blacksburg, Montgomery Co. census and he was also married there, Jan 1, 1812. The 1820 census shows that two of his children were born in Montgomery Co., before he followed Robert to Lawrence Co., Ohio. Robert's daughter, Mary was born Jul 26, 1787 in Greenbrair Co. and latter married John Morrison there. They also later moved to Lawrence Co. Robert McCorkle and family were also in 1810 Kanahwa Co. census.
  
  Christian Co., Kentucky was named for William Christian. In 1774, Capt. Christian raised 300/400 men to help Lewis at the Battle of Kanahwa (Better know to me as Battle of Pt. Pleasant). The first explorers and surveyors of western Kentucky were Christian, James Davis and John Montgomery from Augusta Co. At age 43, Christian was killed (Apr 1782/1786) near Eddy Creek, Kentucky while surveying . John McCorkle and Lydia lived in Christian Co. in the early 1800s and several of their children were born and married there.
  
  In 1764 a James McCorkle served in the VA militia under a Capt. William Christian.(Draper)
  
  The Samuel McCorkle family lived nearly adjacent to the Christian family (William, Robert & John) in the Beverley Patent in Augusta Co., VA.
  
  On Oct 18, 1810 a Martha McCorkle married Samuel Compton in Green Co. Kentucky. Martha's mother, Martha, gave consent. A witness was William Adams.
  
  On Feb 17, 1795, in Augusta Co, a William McCorkle, age 16, was bound to Heny Moiser. Probable grandson of Sam Sr.
  
  On Jul 22, 1806 Samuel McCorkle married Jane Black in Green Co. This was most likely the son of Samuel Jr. On , Jane McCorkle later married Cumfort Bruster.
  
  Samuel Jr. and John probably obtained their Green Co. land from the 1000 acre parcel that Margaret and William Adams inherited.
