  • Note*: A James McCorkle was a witness to deeds for land that John & Nancy McCorkle purchased, but it is clear that was not the same James McCorkle found in the 1840 Clinton Co., MO census near John ( born 1780) & Samuel McCorkle. The 1840 Clinton census, James had one male child & one female child, both under 5 years old. This profile does not fit the will of James F. McCorkle at all. This will was probated in November, 1840 and mentions his wife Sarah and four young daughters. On the other hand, the 1840 Clinton Co. census profiles of Samuel & James exactly fit the names of the children of Samuel & James found in the 1850 DeKalb Co., MO census. DeKalb was formed from Clinton in 1845. In 1850, Lydia, the widow of John McCorkle (died 1814) was in the home of James in DeKalb, so the James of 1840 Clinton/1850 Dekalb is surely the son of John (died 1814). Several researchers have suggested that James and Samuel of 1840 Clinton were both sons of John (born 1780), because they were living near this John in 1840. Certainly James was not and Samuel's 1840 Clinton profile exactly fits the Samuel found in 1830 Clay census. In 1830 this Samuel was living near the sons of John (died 1814). Further, most assume that the James that died in 1840, leaving widow Sarah, is the same James that married Sally Edwards in Clay Co. in July, 1831. I can find no James McCorkle (or variation) in the 1830 Clay Co., census, or in MO for that matter. It is most likley that James, son of John (died 1814), was living with his older brother Archibald and two of his other younger brothers. Also in the house is a much older female assumed to be Lydia, widow of John (died 1814). From all this I conclude that James F. was the son of John (born 1780). He probably came to MO shortly after the 1830 census and died shortly before the 1840 census. The 1820 Green Co. KY census shows a John McCorkle living beside Samuel McCorkle Jr. With John and his wife is a male 0-10, 2 males 10-16 and 2 females 0-10. This John is assumed to be the son of Samuel Jr. and his wife would be from a marriage prior to Nancy Wright. So the James F. also fits this profile.3,4

    "Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress of the 7th June 1832 State of Ohio County of Lawrence Court of Common Pleas August Term 1832 On the 29 Day of August A.D. 1832, personally appeared before the judges of the court of com. Pleas aforesaid in & for said county in open court, Robert McCorkel a resident of Union Township in the county of Lawrence, a farmer, age 72 years, who being first duly sworn, according to law, does on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress ????? June 7th 1832.
    That, firstly, he enlisted in the army of the United States in the month of October 1776 - (the day of the month he does not remember believes the 10th), at Staunton, Augusta County, Virginia, for the Term of two years with ?????????????? and served in the 12th Regt. of the Virginia Line under the following named officers, to wit, in the company commanded by Capt. Michael Boyer (or Bowyer) (the Lieutenents name was Robert Gamble, Ensign John McDowell) The Regt. was commanded by Col. James Wood & Gen. Scott commanded the Brigade. Immediately after he enlisted, he went into the service & served faithfuly the whole term, as follows, the company during the following winter was stationed at the head of the Monongahea River called (Tigres?) Valley, at Randolph County & ?? there till March 1777 - From there they went to Philadelphia - Here Declarant was sick with the small pox for some weeks - as soon as he recovered he marched & joined the main army near West Point - From there he went with the army to Brandywine & Germantown, I fought in these battles - Lay at Valley Forge during the winter following - In the spring or summer of 1778 went with the army through New Jersey to White Plains thence to West Point wher he continued till he was regulary discharged on the 14 November 1778 - This term of service was performed as a private - He further declares that he was born & raised at Augusta County, Virginia, six miles S. West of Staunton where he enlisted - Resided at Augusta Co. at (comminat?), & for year after the war.
    And the said Robert McCorkel further declares, secondly, that sometime in the summer of 1780, (the month & day he does not recollec) he enlisted again at the same place when he ??? ???? in Augusta County Virginia, for the Term of Eighteen Months, & faithfuly served the whole term under the (officers?) & at the places follow - following - to wit - In the company commanded by Capt. St(r?)ubling in the first Regt. of the Virginia Line, commanded by Col. Haws - in Gen. Greenes Brigade - Immediately after he enlisted he went into the Southern States & continued there till about the close of the year 1781 - when he was regularly discharged - He enlisted for this Term at Staunton in Virginia - Then matched to the (night, right, fight?) ?? Guilford to Her???, ?x - where he lay with the corps besieging the Fort 42 days - Then ? returned toward Virginia - Then marched to Orangeburgh in South Carolina - then to Columbia, Eastern Springs & Camden, at which latter place he was discharged. He was in the battles of Eastern Springs, Fort Friday(Findley?) & several other skirmishes - This latter service was performed in the capacity of orderly sergeant. He received regular discharges the first signed by Col. (Rupert?) at the termination of both the before ???? term of service but whether in writing, except the first - or by whom signed & except the first he can not say - He has now no documentary evidence of his service or discharges.
    He hereby relinquishes every claim whatsoever to a pension or an annuity, except the present, & declares that his name is not on the pension roll of any agency in any state -

Witnesses John Layne & Samuel Layne senior on 5 October 1830". Robert McCorkle contests will. (Solomen Beckley his attorney)The court affirmed that Robt is brother to John and "nearest of kin" residing in Lawrence County. Robt declined taking letters of administration on the estate therefore the court approved John Layne administrator; bond by Philip Forsh(Forb?, Forch?) and Samuel Layne Sr. Richard Morrison, John McCrea and Isiah Crawford appointed to appraise estate. The case was continued to the next term so that the court could study the evidence. interlineations, "one cow and all my sheep", "appoint John Layne exectutor".

    To me, the above court proceding is the biggest McCorkle mystery in Lawrence Co. Who was the John McCorkle that died? He had a brother, Robert, in Lawrence Co.

    One explanation is that John, the son of Robert Sr. died, BUT this John is accounted for in the administration of Robert's eatate in 1835.
    Another explanation is that this is the proported will of John, son of Samuel Sr. and brother to Robert Sr. of Lawrence Co. BUT John was supposedly killed in Lawrence Co. in 1814. This would have been a long, long time to keep his sheep.(I have never seen any proof of John's death date.)
    Since neither one of the explanation is satisfactory, I don't know. A very long shot might be that John was the son of Samuel or John, Robert Senior's brothers from Green Co., KY. Both were in Lawrence Co c1810/1815. John Sr. had sons John & Robert. Sam Jr. had son John, but no son Robert that I know of. Could deceased John be one of their sons? If so, a lot of pedigrees would be shot down.

    June 18, 1833: "Robert McCorkle, Petitioner vrs James McCorkle and John McCorkle, Thomas Templeton and wife, Rolan Brammer and wife, David, Joel and Robt. J., infant heirs of Samuel McCorkle, John Morrison and wife, John Colwell and wife, Jacob McCorkle and Andrew McCorkle, Defendants."

    The court ordered that land known as Northwest Quarter, Section 8, Township 1, Range 16, be divided in 10 equal shares. This was part of the estate of Robert, Sr.20,21

McCorkle got this info from John Hale Stutesman. I have never found any official account of the death of John, but this story has been told by others with slight variations. A transcript of a January 14, 1934, Huntington WV Herald Advertiser article by R. C. Hall reads remarkably like the information found in "From Viking Glory". This article relates the above story of the death of John McCorkle, but only gives his death year as 1814. Also, other Lawrence Co., OH McCorkle lore found in the article is also found in "From Viking Glory". We have concluded that Stutesman obtained the bulk of his information about the Lawrence Co. McCorkles from the Hall article and, in turn, passed this information on to Rev. McCorkle. However, even though Mr. Hall seems to have interviewed one or more McCorkles, this transcript of the article contains several glaring errors in the lineage of the Lawrence Co., OH McCorkles. It is impossible to know if these errors came from the transcription process, McCorkle memory lapses or Mr. Hall's misunderstandings and/or mistakes. )13,14

Very close neighbors of Samuel Lain (Layne) were John Lain (Layne) & Philip Faught (Fout), All three of these men seem to be the men who participated in the probate of the will of John McCorkle on 29 Nov 1830. John Layne was appointed executor, when Robert McCorkle declined this position. Samuel Layne of Lawrence Co., OH was a Revolutionary War veteran. He was a Private in the VA militia. Affidavits supporting & attached to his 29 Aug 1832 pension application were signed by Robert McCorkel & John Stumbaugh, both of Lawrence Co., OH. His application was filed in Lawrence Co., OH & states that he was born 14 Jan 1759 in Goochland Co., VA. He enlisted in Fluvanna Co., VA & served under Captains Parish, Adams & Newell & Colonels Buford & Gunby. After the war he lived in Bedford & Patrick Co., VA & Floyd Co., KY. He moved to Lawrence Co. in 1829. It is very likely that John McCorkle lived with or near these folks.)15

Through Solomon Beckley his attorney, Robert McCorkle questions the interlineations and contests will. "Robt is brother to John" and “nearest of kin residing in Lawrence County". Robt declined taking Letters of Administration on the estate, therefore the Court approved John Layne administrator; Bond with Philip Fout and Samuel Layne Sr.
    Richard Morrison, John McCrea and Isiah Crawford appointed to appraise the estate.
    The case was continued so that the Court could study the evidence.
    Interlineations included “one cow and all my sheep ”and “appoint John Layne executor”.16

Samuel McCorkle1,2

b. circa 1720, d. 1788
  • Note*: The Samuel McCorkle line has been proven and documented to Samuel and Sarah (Buchanan ?) of Augusta Co., Virginia. Samuel, or his parents, came to Augusta from their original settlement in the Derry and Paxtang region of Lancaster (now Dauplin) Co., Pennsylvania. According to William Henry Egle, Notes and Queries, Relating to Pennsylvania (pub: 1895), this area was first settled in about 1713 by Scots-Irish Presbyterians. Samuel McCorkle and John Montgomery from the north of Ireland settled in Paxtang prior to 1735. Derry Church (originally Spring Creek) was built in 1720 at a site 14 miles east of Harrisburg and Paxtang Church (originally called Fishing Creek) was located about 3 miles east of Harrisburg. The Rev. John Roan's Congregation of Derry, Paxtang and Mt. Joy (1745-1775) includes Samuel and Alexander McCorkle, as well as, several Mongomerys and Alexanders. By the 1730s, a group of the Pennsylvania McCorkles had moved down the Great Valley of Virginia to the Staunton area of Augusta Co., Virginia. They purchased land from William Beverly in an area known as Beverly Manor/Irish Tract. In 1732, Beverly petitioned the Colonial Council, "I could get a number of people from Pennnsylvania to settle on the Shenandoah if I could obtain land there". While the government at Williamsburg and the Church of England did not relish the idea of Presbyterians in Virginia, they did like the barrier to the Indians that these settlers provided. When Beverly surveyed the land in 1736 he noted that some people from Pennsylvania were already settled there. In fact, Beverly and a James McCorkle engaged in a lawsuit since James was already living on the surveyed tract. The court ruled that James could stay after he paid nominal sum to Beverly. Some early male McCorkles mentioned in Lyman Chalkley's Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia are: Alexander, James, Robert, Patrick, William, Benjamin, Samuel and John.      From Beverly Manor, some McCorkles moved south down the valley to Rockbridge & Montgomery Co., Virginia and to South Carolina. In about 1790, some of the South Carolina clan moved north into and around Bourbon and Fayette Co., Kentucky. Later, some of these McCorkles moved on to Miami Co., Ohio. In the mid-1790s, Robert and John, sons of Samuel and Sarah, moved from Augusta to Bath Co., Virginia. John move on to Green Co., Kentucky where he was joined by his brother Samuel. Robert moved to Kanawha Co., Virginia and finally to Lawrence Co., Ohio. John was supposedly killed while traveling from Green to Lawrence and Lydia, the widow of John, soon moved to the Ray/Clay Co. area of Missouri. Samuel died in Green Co. and Robert died in Lawrence Co.
         
    The foremost McCorkle researcher, the Rev. Louis McCorkle, sorts the early McCorkles as follows:

         "The First Three" (may have been the sons of Alexander McCorquodale),     
    1.James, b.c. 1700 in Argyll Co. Scotland. Landed in Philadelphia and settled in the forks of the Brandywine River in 1729. His wife was Jane and they had seven sons and one daughter.
         
    2.William, also landed in Philadelphia, about 1730 and moved to the Valley of Virginia.
         
    3..Samuel, settled in Paxtany c. 1737, and married an Alexander.

    James and Robert of Waxhaw Settlement, South Carolina were almost certainly brothers,      probably the brothers of Samuel and probably the sons of James or William, above.

    This points to Wiliam (2) as the father of Samuel of Augusta, but as far as I can tell, this is just a guess. Other researchers of the McCorkle line have made this connection, but I have never seen any proof of this at all. Others have guessed James as Samuel's father, but again there is no proof of this connection. It is fairly certain that the majority of the Pennsylvania McCorkles came from Ulster, Ireland, but most likely came to Ireland from Scotland during the King james Plantation Period.

    Anderson's History of the Scottish Nation says:
    Mac Toruil (the son of Torquil), Mac Corkle, the surname of a Highland sept, was founded by Torquil, a prince of Denmark under Kenneth the Great. Kenneth was in Ireland assisting Alpin, King of the Scots, against the Picts. Torquil, a Danish prince, was rewarded with land near Loch Awe, by Kenneth, for preforming a hazardous mission. Mac Torquil is still used in some places in the Highlands and is one of the oldest names in County Argyle. The last lineal descendant is dead. In the great invasion of North Ireland, the family moved to Derry.

He owned land in Augusta by Feb 27, 1749, but he was not named as a processioner, a job usually reserved for more mature & experienced men. He seems to have been married by 1752. So I am going to guess 1720, but he could have been older or even a little younger.

  • Event-Misc*: We have never seen any proof of Sarah's maiden name. The Buchanan assumption is based mainly on the fact that Patrick Buchanan was an exector for Sam's will and Mary Buchanan was a witness. Also, the close association of the Buchanans and McCorkles in Augusta and Green Counties provides more circumstantial evidence. Patrick Buchanan was probably the son of John Buchanan whose will was proven 20 Apr 1790. His 22 Oct 1776 will names his wife Margaret, but he did not name a Sarah although she was surely alive at this time. Another possibility is Samuel Buchanan who first lived in Augusta Co., then moved to Washington Co. where he died testate with a will dated 11 Oct 1774 and proved 18 Mar 1783. VA. His will names his wife Martha & sons John, Samuel, Andrew & Robert; howeverer, he did not even mention any daughters. Since Samuel & Sarah McCorkle had a daughter Martha, we think Samuel Buchanan is a better guess.
