• Note*: We are virtually certain John A. Woody,1st recorded in the 1850 Haywood Co., NC census, was the son of William Woody of Spartanburg Co., SC & the grandson of Nicholas Woody of the same plaace. We are absolutely sure that his parents were not Talton/Tolton/Tarlton & Elizabeth Loggins Woody as alleged by many. The yDNA of a direct Woody descendant of John A.Woody matches that of another William Woody descendant and also a large group of descendants of Virginia Woodys first found near Richmond in the mid-1600s. Indeed, Talton Woody, bc 1755, did not seem to have a son John to be claimed by any lineage. First, the foremost researcher of this line, Verl F. Weight (deceased), did years of thoughtful research on the lineage of Talton Sr. and even did considerable on-site research with Tolton's descendants in North Carolina. He records the ten children of Talton & Elizabeth Loggins Woody in his book "A Branch of the Family Tree..." published in 1960. John is not one of the children listed. Images of this document are online and anyone calling themselves a "researcher" should be able to find them. Second, on 22 Nov, 1819, Tarleton & Elizabeth Woodde deposed that they were the parents of Tarlton Woodde who "enlisted in the service of the United States" & that he "died somewhere in the north part of the United States while in the Army of the United States". In addition, they deposed that "the male heirs being brothers of the said Tarleton Woodde are William Woodde, Naaman Woodde, Jonathan Woodde, James Woodde, Logins Woodde and Theoplilus Woodde" So, in November, 1819, six sons of Talton Woody were living and John was not among them. Third, a causual look at the early South Carolina censuses will show that Talton Jr. and his brothers were long gone to Tennessee and North Carolina. The great grandfather of John A. was most likely Henry Woody, first found in Spartanburg in the late 1700s.
