  • Note*: Much of the lineage of William Woody has been researched & published by Susie Davis for the Davis Family Tree at Ancestry.com Public Family Trees.
  • Note: The 1820, 1830 & 1840 Spartanburg censuses seem to indicate that William & Nancy may have had an addition male & four females over the children enumerated in the 1850 census; however, the male was probably the son of Nicholas Woody and some of the females could have been the daughters of George Rowland.
  • Note: Some of the people & dates in the 1850 & 1860 William Woody censuses are difficult for us to reconcile with other data. From the 1840 census & deed info, we are led to believe that at least one of the males in the 1850 census was the son of Nicholas Woody and that this was the Henry J. Woody that participated in the sale of the Nicholas Woody property in 1853. However, if the 1850 age is correct he would have been 16/17 in 1853 and the deed could have been later been invalidated since he was a minor. Since this law was common knowledge, it was seldom violated. Therefore, we think the census age of Henry was incorrect and that he was at least 21 which would have made his birth before c1832. Since Nicholas was enumerated with a male child 0/5 in the 1830 census, this was likely Henry J. Woody. This could have also been the Henry J. Woody, bc 1827) found in the 1860 NC census. It also seems possible that there were two Henry J. Woodys. Next, the enumeration of Madison, bc 1835 and clearly marked as a female on 1850 matches the well with the birth dates of James Madison on the 1860 & 1870 censuses. So if the Madison of 1850 was James Madison, who was the James, age 10, in the 1850 census? William D. Woody was 21 in the 1860 census, but Dudley was 8 in 1850. Another large discrepancy of 13 years. Nicholas J(efferson) Woody was 24 in the 1860 census. He was either James, 10, or Jackson, 8, in the 1850 census. Yet another large discrepancy. The 1860 census dates seem to match the 1840 census dates much better than the 1850 ones. Quite a confusing mess.

  • Note*: The last known residence for several of these Woodys was in the 1860 Spartanburg census. The nearest Post Office was listed as New Prospect. FindAGrave has photos of most of the markers in the Mount Lebanon Cemetery in New Prospect. There are quite a number of simple stone markers with one or two initials. Among these are several stones with the last initial initial of "W" and several with the first initial that fits the given names of these Woodys. We have not found any other records that list the burials in this cemetery, but they may exist.7

  • Note*: In the 1898 book "Genealogy of the Lewis Family in America", Elizabeth Ballenger, the daughter of Larkin & Elizabeth Wood Ballenger is recorded as the wife of Madison Wood. One child named Marietta is also recorded. In her 1919 Confederate pension application, Elizabeth Woody recorded that her husband, James M. Woody died Apr 22, 1877. However, the 1880 census for Elizabeth Woody & her family does not enumerate a Marietta, or such. So we conclude that either the author of the book was mistaken or Eilzabeth had another child afer the 1880 census. Because the author had Madison Wood as Elizabeth's husband, we think the author was mistaken.10

  • Note: It is very likely that George Rowland was related to thte Rowland family of Henry Co., VA. Some of the descendants of this family are narrowly discussed in the "History of Henry County, Virginia" compiled by Judith Hill in 1925; however, the progenitors are very vague. The best clue we have found is the will of John Rowland of Henry County, dated July 5, 1780. To my brother Michael Rowland's eldest son William Rowland, one cow and calf. To Michael Rowland, brother of said William, 1 sh. and no more. to my brother George Rowland, all my right to a tract I formerly obtained a deed of trust from George Lamkin, lying on Marrowbone Creek.
    To John Palfree, all my right to a survey whereon he now lives, together with my wearing apparel. My whole estate be kept together; creditors allowed three years or longer to bring in their accounts. To my wife Mary, out of the profits of my estate 200 (lb) annually, but should the currency of the money rise in value then a proper deduction to be made. To Obedience Ryan, wife to Philip Ryan, in consideration of my wife's standing to this my last will, one Negro girl Phillis. To Geo. Rowland Jr. and William Rowland, sons of Gilbert Rowland, each of them one-sixth part of the net proceeds annualy after paying taxes, clothing the Negroes, corn, meat, stock of all kinds, my just debts and the clothing and education of Garland Akin excepted. To the two sons of Joshua Bowls, dec'd, 199 (lb) each for their education to be paid to their mother Sarah Bowls or their trustees. Legacies heretofore mentioned to be null and void except as to my said wife after Garland Akin arrives to the age of 21. Then to Garland Akin one-half of real and personal estate. The other moiety equally divided amongst the youngest sons of all my brothers and sisters.If Garland Akin dies without lawful issue, his part equally to survivors ofmy said brothers' and sisters' sons.   • Note*: There is a modern memorial marker for a George Rowland in the Rowland Cemetery in Inman, Spartanburg, SC. It is marked "George Rowland, Grandfather, Henry Co. VA, 1794". If the 1794 ia supposed to be a death date, we think that the will and probate records show it is in error. If the 1794 is supposed to represent the date that George arrived in Spartanburg from Virgina, we think that it likely correct.8
  • Note: Family Legend 2: "Elizabeth Gallahue's father, William, of Huguenot heritage, died in 1754, soon after she was born in Prince William County. After his death, her mother, Ann Kenner Gallahue, married George Rowland. In 1765, the family moved to Pittsylvania County, Virginia (later Henry County) and built a new home on the banks of Marrowbone Creek near the Virginia and North Carolina boundary. George
    Rowland was a leading citizen of Pittsylvania County, and later Henry County when it was erected from
    the western part of Pittsylvania in 1777."
    George Rowland, husband of Anne Kenner Gallahue, was the step father of Elizabeth Gallahue who married Rodney Moore in 1769 in Henry County. Rowland and his family were neighbors of William Moore (II) of Marrowbone Creek, Henry County, Virginia9
  • Note: Family Legend 1: Family record as written by Cousin Lou Rowland. "Sometime in the 1790's, after the Revolutionary War, George Rowland made a prospective trip to South Carolina from his Virginia home. The mode of travel in those days was mostly on horseback, as the country was infested with Tories and robbers. The famous "Murrel Man" were encountered by George Rowland, but having his money in leather saddle bags strapped on "Nande", a trained horse, he escaped after a few shots were fired by both parties. In making his selection he chose a farm owned by one Thomas Hathaway, situated 10 miles above Spartanburg Court House. Having purchased his farm, he returned to his native state of Virginia for his wife, children and negro slaves and brought them to a new home in South Carolina. He afterward bought other farms and several acres in the town of Spartanburg."
