Henry Talley Wooddy

b. circa 1779, d. 15 November 1812
  • Note*: Henry Talley Wooddy died at Haley Cole's in Chesterfield Co., VA, while Samuel Wooddy was living nearby, perhaps also living at Haley Cole's. Since Haley Cole was a close associate of Samuel Wooddy, we strongly suspect that Samuel & Henry were brothers. This assumption is supported by other strong circumstantial evidence. To us, the strongest evidence is that a relatively young Henry Talley Woody, purchaed several large tracts of Georgia land in the early 1800s. Samuel W. Wooddy of Chesterfield also purchased large tracts of land in Chesterfield Co., Virginia in the early 1800s. We posit that the funds for Samuel & Henry's purchases came from the estate settlement & sale of the property of Samuel Woody Sr. of Hanover Co., Virginia. There were also many Talleys in Hanover Co. in the 1700s. Henry was married to Keziah Jennings and her family was supposedly from Pittsylvania & Henry Co., VA.
  • Note: Some have said Henry Talley Wooddy served in the War of 1812 (also known as the Creek Indian Wars in Georgia). Some have even said that Henry died as a result of this war. A Henry Woody did serve in the 4th Regiment (Booth's), Georgia Militia. A Henry Woody was recorded on the rolls of this unit at Ft. Hawkins, GA in November 1814. However, Henry Talley Wooddy died November 15, 1812, about two years before the Ft. Hawkins' muster.1,2
  • Name Variation: Henry Talley Woody3,4
  • Birth*: circa 1779; Estimated birth age based on on Henry being taxed in 1801. Supporting this assumption is the 1784 birth date of Henry's wife and their small family. If Henry was part of the Virginia Wooddys, he was never taxed there. So he would have been less than 21 when he moved to Georgia.5
