• Note*: John J. Woody was almost surely a grandson of John Woody Sr. of Hanover Co., VA. John's death record relates the he was c1801 in Hanover. John is a likely candate for the John Woody Jr. that witnessed the marriage bond for Robert Woody and Polly Corey in 1813. At this time, the term "Jr" often did not mean a father & son relationship. It often meant that two men in the same area shared a name: An older one (Sr) and a younger (Jr) one. Also, Virginia law permitted children aged 14 & over to witness contracts. If John W. was a year or so older older than his reported age at his death he would have qualified as a witness to his brother's marriage. John W. & Ann seem to have left Virgina at an early age. Ann's father was deceased and Frederick Woody was deceased and their estates had been settled. Robert Woody was the son of Frederick Woody, who died in 1804. Because two Woodys married two Corey sisters, we strongly suspect that John W. was also the son of Frederick Woody & the brother of Robert Woody. However, much of this evidence is circumstantial, so it is a tough call.

It seems impossible to know which one of these men was mentioned in the William McGeorge document, but it is interesting to note that a John William Woody from this area moved to Kentucky about 1830.⁵
