• Note: The following story was related by McIver Woody, M.D, in his unpublished research entitled "David Woody Alias David Brooks and his Agnates".
  " George E. Woody told Samuel Elisha Woody that another David Brooks lived near his father, Ruffin’s place; that he was very old when George E. was a child; and was a marvellous (sic) 'know-all'. He said that the Brooks were rather lewd - and that one of them had an illegitimate child by a Woody and that child was David, and was usually called 'David Brooks'. When he grew up and his real father married the Brooks woman, David had his name made by the Legislature after his real father to be 'David Woody'." (DLW notes: At least part of this story seems to be confirmed. Samuel Elisha Woody lived until 1924 and was the father of McIver Woody, who was born in 1886. George E. Woody, bc 1860, was the son of Ruffin Woody, bc 1829. In the 1870 Person Co. census, Ruffin, George and family are enumerated two home away from a David Brooks, bc 1806, and family. However, we could not find such a petition in the NC records. In addition, the yDNA of 3 descaendants of David is complely different from that of the Virginia Woodys. Since these males all seemed to think they were related, the father of David could have been a Woody, but was adopeted or the son of a unmarried female Woody.⁵
• Note*: There is direct primary evidence that David Brooks and David Woody of Person Co., NC were one and the same person. There is very strong direct evidence that the Brooks, Gravitts and Woodys were closely connected in Virginia and North Carolina. However, we have never seen any direct evidence at all naming the wife of David Brooks/Woody in Person Co., NC. A David Woody, assumed son of Henry Woody of Frankiln Co., VA, disappeared from Franklin Co., VA about the same time that David Woody appeared in Person; however, this now appears to be a coincidence. David Woody of Person is connected to James Woody of Pittsylvania by direct evidence. Other researchers claim the David and Ona Brooks moved from Halifax to Pennsylvania. Although some Gedcoms reference "Chester County Pennsylavina Wills 1713-1825", there is no will in this book for either David or Ona/Anna. A David Brooks is mentioned twice: once in 1740 and once in 1763. We can find no evidence at all to connect David Brooks of Halifax Co., VA to the David Brooks found in Chester Co., PA.

• Note: yDNA: The yDNA of 3 descendants of David Brooks/Woody is virtually unique. There are no genetic connections to Brooks. These three all match with a GD=2. Only two other yDNA37 surname matches with been recorded with any surname. A GD= 4 with one Love descendant. We have not found any connection with the Love surname. A GD=1 with one Wright descendant. We have looked for possible It is possible that this yDNA clue has signifigence. Wright/Right has been used as a middle name by descendants of William Henry Woody, a son of David Brooks/Wood; however, we have not found a useful connection.

The slaves mentioned ended up in the estate of James Woody of Pittsylvania when he died in 1818. Descendants of James Woody have a completely different yDNA from that of descendants of David Brooks/Woody yet John considered James to be a brother. One explanation is that John could have been a half brother to James, both sharing the same mother but not the same father. This John was probably the unidentified person named in early Pittsylvania & Caswell Co., NC records & it is likely that he was the half brother of David Brooks/Woody since the yDNA of descendants of the VA & NC families is different. We now assume that John indeed was the brother of James in Pittsylvania and that b outh were the sons of Janmes Woody last recorded in 1755 Louisa County. The yDNA of David Brooks/Woody descendants is extremely rare & we have never found a good match in any yDNA database at FTDNA or ySearch.^17,5
