Henry Woody1
b. circa 1690, d. 1766
- Note*: The father of Henry Woody of Henrico and possibly Hanover is strictly a guess based on the fact that Edward Trotman owned adjoining land in Henry's 1722 land grant and that Edward Trotman was processioned several times with John Woody.
- Event-Misc*: The property of Henry Woody was in Henrico on Tuckahoe Creek, a tributary of the James River. Tuckahoe Creek forms the border of Goochland & Henrico counties. The location was very close to the Goochland Co. line. This location was about 20 miles west of the Woody residences in the Cold Harbor area, east of Richmond.2
- Marriage*: Principal=Webby ?3
- Birth*: circa 1690; There is very little evidence available to estimate the birth date of Henry. He appears to be an adult in the 1722 land grant and he seems to have died in 1766. He does not appear in the 1704 New Kent County Quit Rent Rolls with John, James and Simon, but these rolls only included property owners. So we are going to guess c1690. Because of the fact that John He was not the son of Simon and it is very unlikely he was the son of John of Hanover. So we are left with James.1,4,2
- Event-Misc: 13 November 1721; Hanover Co., VA; Grant: Edward Trotman, 390 acres on both sides of Turkey Creek, adjoining John Glen, Thomas Massie & Turkey Creek. ( This location in western Hanover became part of St Martin's Parish in 1726, so the inhabitants, if any, would not have been processioned in St. Paul's Parish.)2
- Event-Misc: 13 November 1721; Hanover Co., VA; Grant: Thomas Massie of New Kent County, 387 acres on both sides of Turkey Creek.2
- Event-Misc: 18 February 1722; Hanover Co., VA; d grant(DLW note: Records of other adjacent landowners show that this location was on Turkey Creek in western Hanover. The 1723 processioning records of Hanover Co. have been lost and this location was in St. Martin's Parish as of 1726. St. Martin's processioning records show very little detail, so it is unknown if Henry ever lived at this location.)2
- Event-Misc: 5 September 1723; Hanover Co., VA; Grant: Peter King, 390 acres on the upper side of Turkey Creek adjoining Thomas Massie & Turkey Creek.2
- Event-Misc: 24 March 1725; Hanover Co., VA; Grant: John McQuerry of New Kent Co., 300 acres adjoining Peter King, John McQuerry, William (Bourne?), Johnson, Henry Woody Capt. Massie & Turkey Creek.2
- Event-Misc: 28 September 1728; Henrico Co., VA; Grant: John Martin; 400 acres on North side of James River, on a branch of Tuckaho Creek called Drinking Hole Branch.2
- Event-Misc: 28 September 1728; Henrico Co., VA; Grant: Richard Wade. 400 acres in the fork of Tuckaho Creek. Lines of Robert Wilson/Willis, Laforce/Lefrance. (DLW note: probably Laffoon.)2
- Event-Misc: 20 February 1738; Goochland Co., VA; Probate: Accounts of estate of Timothy Rich, dec'd, by Catherine, Administratrix. Debits; Mary Guinn, William Johnson, Henry Woody. Childrens estate in hands of Abraham Venable. Cow & heifer to Jeremiah Parker Rich.4
- Event-Misc: 15 March 1744; Goochland Co., VA; Grant: Leonard Henley, 5s, 30 acres in Goochalnd Co. on the branches of Tuckahoe Creek. Adjoining John Martin's corner, Richard Wade, Henrico County line.2
- Event-Misc: 20 September 1745; Henrico Co., VA; Grant: Lenord Henley; 130 acres begg. at John Martins corner on the county line; thence crossing Drinking hole Run. Lines of Johnson, Martin, Shoemaker & Robert Hardwick. A line dividing this county from Goochland.2
- Event-Misc: 21 September 1745; Henrico Co., VA; Deed: To Henry Woody of Hanover from Nicolas Pryer of County and Parish of Henrico for #40. 170 acres in Henrico Parish at head of Drinking Hole Branch of Tuckahoe Creek where said Nicolas now lives, purchased of John Martin. Witnesses: Benjamin Johnson, William Street, Sarah Johnson5
- Event-Misc: 7 October 1751; Henrico Co., VA; Deed: William Prier of Albemarle Co. to William Harding for 5 pounds, 280 acres being part of greater tract of land granted William Laffoon by patent and is the upper part of said tract; bounded upon the branches of Drinking Hole and the head branches of the Chickahominy and adj. Evan Shoemaker, Benjamin Johnson, John Martin and Simond Ligon. Wit: Christopher John Thomas, James Conaway, William Lawless, Jesse Ellis6
- Event-Misc: 7 January 1752; Henrico Co., VA; Election of Burgesses: For Wiiliam Randolph; among others, Henry Wooddie, Thomas Robenson, Jos Hopkins, Richd Loving, Richard Cottrell. - Event-Misc: circa 1754; Henrico Co., VA; Deed: Henry Woody to William Henley, both of Henrico, 30 pounds, 175 acres. Adjacent: Benjamin Johnson, Leonard Henley, John Martin. Upper end Henrico and being part of a larger tract which said Hardy bought from the heirs of William Laffoon deceased and adjacent to the tract said Henley bought of Henry Woody. Witnesses: Julius Allen, George Adams, Benjamin Clark. Recorded 4 December 17583
- Event-Misc: 6 September 1762; Henrico Co., VA; Deed: To Austin Woody from William Henley, both of Henrico, 7 pounds, 50 acres. Adjacent John Martin's Patent and Samuel Ligon. Being a tract that William Handley bought of William Hardy. Signed: William Henley and Mary Henley.3
- Event-Misc: 7 November 1763; Henrico Co., VA; Deed: William Henley to William Lawless, 50 pounds, 124 acres. - Death*: 1766; Henrico Co., VA1
- Probate*: November 1766; Henrico Co., VA; Probate: Will of Henry Woody proved by Webby (DLW note: Webby has been mistranscribed as Westly) Woody, one of the executors; Security: William Woody & Stephen Spurlock. Stephen Spurlock, the other executor refuses burthen of executorship. Appraisal: Thomas Ellis, Samuel Shepherd & Richard Cottrell. (DLW note: The will of Henry Woody has not survived. Richard Cottrell was the father of Elizabeth Cottrell Denis, who married Samuel Woody in 1785. In addition, no record of any William Woody has been found in Henrico Co., so I postulate that William was the person living in Bedford Co. at this time and was the son of Henry.)1
