Micajah Woody1,2,3

b. circa 1716, d. circa 1774
  • Note: Although many "researchers" have avered that Micajah was the son of James Woody, we have never found any evidence of this relationship. The only connection that we have found is that Micajah was a Quaker and James was very probably a Quaker.
  • Note: It would seem that Micajah & Cecilia (Cisley) Woody did not live together.
  • Note*: In 1800, the Samuel Woody estate of 120 acres to conveyed to Micajah Woody. We see no way that Micajah could have inheirited this property, so he probably purchased from Samuel's heirs.
  • Name Variation: Micajah Wooddy
  • Birth*: circa 1716; VA; Birth date estimate based on Micajah's marraige in 1739 & his death in 1801.2
  • Marriage*: 4 November 1739; Friends Meeting House, Hanover Co., VA; Witnesses: Micajah Wooddy, Cesilia Wooddy, Elizabeth Johnson, Judith Wooddy, Margery Johnson, Martha Johnson, Lucy Johnson, John Johnson Snr, Gideon Johnson, Squire Johnson, Macale Johnson, Jas Baley, Richarde Mellon, John Wooddy, John Johnson Jnr, Ashle Johnson, Chas Johnson, Thos Baley, Nathan Johnson, Jas Johnson, George Bell. • Event-Misc: 30 September 1767; St. Paul's Parish, Hanover Co., VA; Processioning Order & Return: Pre. #16. Although Micajah Wooddey was not included in the order, John Wooddy, Samuel Wooddy & Micajah Wooddey were processioned. Samuel Wooddy & James Boatwright were the processioners for the precinct.5

The bill concerned the ownership of the "increase" (i.e., children) of the two female slaves that had belonged to Micajah. (DLW note: Although the will of Micajah Woody appears to have been lost, this suit provides a seemingly complete abstract, as well as, other valuable information.)2

William Woody1,2

b. before 1751, d. between 1825 and 1826
  • Note*: There were at least two William Woody's in the early Hanover1800s. One was the son of Micajah Woody and he inheirited 120 acres from Micajah's estate. William #2 is often, but not always, termed William Woody Jr. He appears on the tax tecords with 50/48 acres about the same time that the William #1 with 120 acres disappears. William #2 is recorded with land until his property was sold in 1823. He only appears on the personal property tax records in 1806 & 1809 and he was in the 1810 Hanover census. So he did not seem to live in Hanover after 1810. William Woody of Loudoun Co., VA died 1823-1825. The property of William Woody of Hanover was sold in 1823. Most of the evidence indicates that William #2 was the son of John & Ruth Woody.
  • Note: From the personal property tax records, we have inferred that one of the sons of William Woody was Samuel Woody. He was only recorded in 1820.3
  • Birth*: before 1751; VA; Birth date estimate based on William being at least 16 when he was excused from military duty in 1767.2
  • Event-Misc*: 3 October 1767; Henrico Monthly Meeting, Henrico Co., VA; Excused from military service. William Woody of Hanover Co.2
  • Event-Misc: 4 April 1772; Swamp Meeting, Henrico Co., VA; Disowned: William Woody, member of the Swamp PM & son of Micajah, disowned. (DLW note: PM probably meant Particular Meeting. The Quakers use Particular to denote a religious worship meeting as contrasted to a Monthly Meeting, which was a business meeting.)2
  • Event-Misc: between 1783 and 1798; Personal Property Tax: William Woody. Taxed in almost every year for 1 person.4
  • Event-Misc: 1803; Hanover Co., VA; Land Tax: Micajah Woody conveyed to William Woody, 120 acres.5
  • Event-Misc: between 1804 and 1811; Hanover Co., VA; Land Tax: William Woody, 120 acres. Taxed each year except 1808, when no Virginia taxes were levied. (DLW note: We could not determine what William did with the 120 acres about 1812.)5
  • Event-Misc: between 1804 and 1825; Hanover Co., VA; Personal Property Tax: William Woody. Taxed in almost every year. Taxed for 1 person in every year except: 1806, 2; 1815, 2; 1816, 3; 1817, 3; 1818, 2; 1819, 3; 1821, 0; 1822, 0; 1825, 0.6,7

John W. Woody1,2

b. circa 1797, d. circa October 1849
  • Note*: The names of the assumed children of John W. Woody of King William are based on significant circumstantial evidence. John W. & his wife Catherine Woody both died in 1849 and were buried in Shockoe Cemetery, Richmond. In the 1850 Richmond, census, John , 22, Ann C., 23, Mary E., 15, Woody were enumerated in the home of William & Elisabeth Woody, 28, Tyler. Reuben Seal, 21, was also with them. These Woody birth dates match exactly with the children in the 1840 King William census for John Woody's family. Mary E. named John W. & Catherine R. Wooddy as her parents when she was married. Ann C. Woody later married Reuben Seal and her brother, John W., married Rebecca ? The CSA discharge order for John W. Woody records his birthplace as King William. John W. died before 1870 and Rebecca remarried. The death records of Elizabeth R. Woody Tyler Perrin & Ann Woody Seal record their birth place as King William. This seems like more than enough evidence to confirm the assumed parent/sibbling relationship.
  • Marriage*: Principal=Catherine R. ?2
  • Birth*: circa 17971,3,4
  • Event-Misc*: between 1814 and 1815; King William Co., VA; Personal Property Tax: John Woody, Jr.3
  • Event-Misc: 28 June 1819; King William Co., VA; A Wm John Woody is mentioned in the Revolutionary War pension records of William McGeorge, a resident of King William Co., VA. The name William Woody was never mentioned in the early census or tax records of King William; howerer, three John Woodys were recorded in the 1820 & 1821 tax records of this county. It seem s impossible to know which one of these men was mentioned in the William McGeorge document, but it is interesting to note that a John William Woody from this area moved to Kentucky before 1830.5
  • Event-Misc: between 1820 and 1829; King William Co., VA; Personal Property Tax: John Woody, Jr.3
