James McCaffrey1,2

b. circa 1747, d. circa 1811
  • Birth*: circa 1747; Philadelphia Co., PA; Estimated birth date based on James first being tithed alone in 1769. By law, at age 21, James would have become responsible for his own tithes and would have been listed as a seperate tithable when he reached age 21, even if he was still living with his parents . In our experience, we have found that taxpayers quite often bent the rules a little, so we usually add a year or two to their age implied by the tithe/tax lists.2

Thomas McCaffrey1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8

b. circa 1777, d. after 8 June 1860
  • Note*: The proof for the father of Thomas is purely circumstantial. McCaffrey was a very unusual name in pre-1800 America & Thomas was a very rare McCaffrey given name. The last tax listing for Thomas in Loudoun was 1803. A Thomas McCaffrey was married in Kentucky in 1808 & enumerated in the 1810 Kentucky census. In the 1850 & 1860 censuses, he was enumerated as being born in VA.
  • Burial*: Saint Theresa Church Cemetery, Rhodelia, Meade Co., KY; Indexed as Thomas McCoffery. Age 107, but the name is Thomas McCaffrey.7,8
  • Name Variation: Thomas McCoffrey7
  • Note: We do not understand the St. Theresa Cemetery tombstone inscriptions for Thomas & Margaret McCaffrey. Thomas & Margaret were both enumerated in the 1850 & 1860 Meade Co., KY censuses. Their census ages indicate they were at least 20 years younger than their tombstone inscriptions indicate. In fact, the 1860 census page was dated months after the death date inscribed on the tombstone. We can only suggest that the tombstones were installed many years after the burials & that the dates are & ages are incorrect.
  • Birth: circa 17538
  • Birth: circa 1772; VA6
  • Birth*: circa 1777; VA; Birth date based on Thomas first being taxed with father James in 1796 and 1850 Meade Co., KY census.2,3
  • Event-Misc: 1796; Loudoun Co., VA; Personal Property Tax: First taxation of Thomas in Loudoun. Names & taxed with his father James. Probably between 18 & 21.2
  • Event-Misc*: 1803; Loudoun Co., VA; Personal Property Tax: Last taxation of Thomas in Loudoun.2
  • Event-Misc: 30 August 1803; Halifax Co., VA; Witness; Thomas McCaffrey was a witness on the marriage license of James McCaffery & Anne Bailey.(DLW note: Thomas & James were brothers.)9

Thomas McCaffree helped save Lambeth fom an accidental drowning while travelling to New Orleans by boat.
  • Census: 7 October 1850; Meade Co., KY; Thomas McCaffrey, 70, VA; Margaret, 65, VA; Margaret, 30, KY. (DLW note: Thomas born circa 1780 and Margaret Sr. 1785.)3

  • Death: 2 February 1860; Age 107. (DLW note: This age seems impossible to us since Thomas was enumerated in the 1850 & 1860 censuses as being born c1772 & 1780. Also, Thomas & Margaret were enumerated on Jun 8, 1860, so the 1860 death date is not correct. But two of their daughters were buried at St. Theresa, so Thomas & Margaret are probably buried there also.)7
  • Death: 15 February 1860; Indexed as Thomas McCoffery, but plainly "Thomas McCaffrey Died Feb 15 1860 Aged 107. (DLW note: The tombstone photo at FindAGrave is excellent. The Thomas McCaffrey name, the 15 Feb 1860 death date and the 107 year death age are very clear.)8

  • Event-Misc*: 1791; Third Battalion, Loudoun Co., VA; Personal Property Tax: Wm McCaffry taxed with Abner Humphery.1
  • Event-Misc: between 1792 and 1793; Third Battalion, Loudoun Co., VA; Personal Property Tax: Wm McCaffry taxed with James McCaffry.1
  • Event-Misc: 1816; Third District, Loudoun Co., VA; Personal Property Tax: William McCaffrey.1
  • Event-Misc: between 1818 and 1819; Third District, Loudoun Co., VA; Personal Property Tax: Wm McCaffrey taxed with Andrew Marten.1
  • Census*: 1820; Leesburg, Loudoun Co., VA; Wm McCafferey: 2,1,0,0,1/3,1,0,1. (DLW note: William McCaffrey, the son of James, seems to have been first taxed as a minor in 1791, This would have made him about 40 in 1820, so this census enumeration is consistent with the first tax record. But where was William between 1794 & 1816? & what happened to him, his wife & his 7 children after the 1820 census?))2

Levi McCaffrey1

b. circa 1792, d. after 1831
  • Note*: There is not a trace of Levi McCaffrey from 1830 until c1857. There is not a record of any McCaffrey related event in Fauquier Co. after 1830.
  • Event-Misc:
  • Birth*: circa 1792; Birth date estimate based on Levi first being taxed with his father James in 1809.1
  • Milit-Beg*: circa 1812; VA; Levi McCaffrey; Pvt., 5th Reg., VA Militia. Also, Pvt., Hunton's Command - Calvary, VA Militia.2
  • Event-Misc: 1828; Loudoun Co., VA; Levi McCaffrey: 1 (DLW note: Last tax lisying for Levi in Loudoun.1
  • Census: 1830; Fauquier Co., VA; Levi McCaffrey: 1,2,0,0,0,1/1,0,1,0,1. (1 male born 1825/1830, 2 males born 1820/1825.)3
  • Census*: 1830; Fauquier Co., VA; Levi McCaffrey: 2,1,2,0,0,1/1,1,0,0,0,1. (2 males born 1825/1830, 1 male born 1820/1825, 2 males born 1815/1820.)4
  • Note: 1830; Fauquier Co., VA; Levi McCaffrey seems to have been enumerated twice in the 1830 Fauquier Co., VA census. There is no way to exactly date these enumerstions, but they are on pages 432 & 438. On each, Levi is surrounded by a completely different group people, so it appears that he moved. The two enumerations are similar, but have significant differences. The oldest males in each enumeration are both in the 30/40 age group. This is the correct age group for Levi McCaffrey, bc 1792, of Loudoun Co., VA; hoever, there are 2 additional younger males in the second enumeration. We do not see any way for two Levis of the same age to exist. We suggest tnat these additional males were the sons of William McCaffrey who was last enumerated in the 1820 Loudoun census. All the other McCaffrey brothers had left Loudoun by this time.3,4
  • Event-Misc: 17 March 1830; Fauquier Co., VA; Levi McCaffree 1.5
  • Death*: after 18313
  • Event-Misc: 29 April 1831; Fauquier Co., VA; Levi McCaffry 1.5
  • Event-Misc*: 16 February 1857; Greene Co., IA; War 0f 1812 Bounty Land Grant Warrant : Authorized by Congress, 3 Mar 1855. Levi McCaffrey, Pvt. Capt. Osborn's Co., VA Militia. Patent transfer. Warrant #11568.120A. Assigned to Charles G. McChesney. (DLW note: These warrants were tranferable. The location of the land is no indication at all of the residence of the original holder. It does seem that Levi McCaffrey was alive at this time; hoverever, we have never found any record of him after the 1830 census. We suspect that Levi was not the person that applied for the warrant or that Levi changed his name sometime after 1830. In addition, the War of 1812 land warrents are online at FamilySearch. Patent # 11568 was issued to James Jones.)6
