John Woody1

b. circa 1670, d. between April 1744 and February 1747
  • Marriage*: Principal=Judith ?2
  • Birth*: circa 1670; John's estimated birth date is based on the assumption that he was at least 30 when taxed for land in 1704.1
  • Event-Misc: 1704; New Kent Co., VA; Quit Rents: John Woody, 100 acres. Symon Woody, 50 acres. James Woody, 130 acres.3
  • Event-Misc: 14 March 1708/9; St. Paul's Parish, New Kent Co., VA; 1st St. Paul's Parish Processioning Return: Pre. #33. Processioners John Wooddy & John White. Others: Richard Thurman, James Jarrard & Edward Trotman.1
  • Event-Misc: 23 November 1711; St. Paul's Parish, New Kent Co., VA; Processioning Return: Pre. #19. Processioners John Wooddy & John White reported processioning the precinct that they were assigned. Others: James Wooddy, Edward Trotman, James Garrard & Mary Thurmond. Another James Wooddy was processioned in Pre. #15 by processioners Edw Moore & Joseph Baughon. Howerver, anoter retoun wit the same date has James [?] Garrard. No Wooddy is mentioned.1
  • Event-Misc: 8 February 1715; St. Paul's Parish, New Kent Co., VA; Processioning Return: Pre. #19. John Wooddy & John White reported processioning the precinct that they were assigned. James Wooddy was also processioned in this precinct. A James Wooddy was also processioned in Pre. #19.1
  • Event-Misc: 10 December 1719; St. Paul's Parish, New Kent Co., VA; Processioning Return: Pre. #19. John Wooddy & John White reported processioning the precinct that they were assigned. James Wooddy was also this precinct, but this is the last time he was mentioned in the processioning records. Others: Edward Trotman, James Jerrard, ? Thurmond & John Howard.1
  • Event-Misc: 24 March 1725; Hanover Co., VA; Grant: Richard & Thomas Watson. 400 acres adjoing Alves.(DLW note: No water course is named in the discription & George Alves had several grants in Hanover. Also, Michael Holland had many grants in Hanover. So we can't determine where this grant was situated.)4
  • Event-Misc: 8 February 1727; Hanover Co., VA; Petition & Grant: Michael Holland petitioned the Virginia Council at Williamsburg for 2000 acres in Hanover Co., 400 acres already granted by patent to Rich'd & Thomas Watson & 400 acres surveyed for John Woody & Benjamin Johnson and assigned to the petition with leave to include the whole in one patent.5
  • Event-Misc: 16 September 1730; St. Paul's Parish, Hanover Co., VA; Surveyor: Ordered that John Wooddy have the Tithables of Capt William Macon living at the Old Quarter, and Swamp Quarter, Capt Thomas Massie's Tithables at his quarter and Thomas Railey's Tithables to assist him in Clearing the road, whereof he is Surveyor." (DLW note: This area seems to have been in the Cold Harbor area, east of Richmond.)1
  • Event-Misc: 20 January 1731; St. Paul's Parish, Hanover Co., VA; Processioning Order & Return: Pre. #17. John Wooddy & John White reported processioning the precinct that they were assigned. Others: John Howard, John Murfield, James Garrat, John Garrat, John Thurmond, Richard Thurmond, Jeremiah Lindsey, John Barker, , M?,1
  • Event-Misc: 28 September 1732; Hanover Co., VA; Land Patent: John Woody of Hanover Co. 400 acres, both sides of Peters Creek, adjoining John Smething, Capt. Clark & Gilbert Gibson. By Little Creek & lowground of Poor Creek. (DlW note: This grant seemd to be in the.north side of the South Anna River in the western part of Hanover othat became St. Martin's Parish in 1726 & Louisa County in 1742. This location seems to be confirmed by the 1770 Louisa court order that addressed some of the provisions of Gilbert Gibson's 1760 Louisa Will. So, if this John Woody lived on this property, he would not have been processioned in St. Paul's Parish)4
  • Event-Misc: 14 June 1733; Hanover Co., VA; Land Grant: John Ragland: 1000 acres on Poor Creek on north side of Southanna adjoining Robert Netherland, John Smething, Francis Smething, John Woodey & Col Nich Merriweather.6
  • Event-Misc: 7 November 1734; Hanover Co., VA; John Woody was named in the estate probate of Moore Woody, son of Simon Woody. Since John was not named in Simon's will, he was most probably not a son of Simon, so he probably was the brother of Simon. Since John & Simon seemed to be about the same age, that relationship is our assumption.7
  • Event-Misc: circa March 1735/36; Hanover Co., VA; Processioning Return: Pre. #17. John Wooddy & Jeremiah Lindsey reported processioning the precinct that they were assigned. This included John Howard, John Murfield, James Garrot, John Garrot, John Thurmond, John Barker & John White. (This processioning return was not dated: however, the processioning order directed that the return be made before March, 1735/1736.)1
  • Event-Misc: 5 June 1736; Hanover Co., VA; Land Patent: John Smething. 1645a, Hanover Co., both sides of Poor & Peters Crs. on N. side of Southanna R.; bounded by John Woody, Nicholas Meriwether, Robert Netherland, Francis Smething, John Burch, Capt. Clark's line on the R. & John Smething's other L.; 400a formerly g. to said John Smething 11 April 1732, the residue never before g. (p 116) 5 jUn 1736.8
  • Event-Misc: 1 September 1739; St. Paul's Parish, Hanover Co., VA; Processioning Return: Pre. #17. John Wooddy & Jeremiah Lindsey reported processioning the precinct that they were assigned. • Event-Misc: 4 November 1739; Hanover Co., VA; Witness: John Wooddy was a witness to the wedding of Micajah Wooddy & Ceclia Johnson. (DLW note: The Quakers allowed non-Quakers to attend their marriages & sign marriage certificates. There is no other mention of John in Virginia Quaker records.)2
  • Event-Misc*: circa 29 March 1744; St. Paul's Parish, Hanover Co., VA; Processioning Return: Pre. #17. John Wooddy & John Howard reported processioning the precinct that they were assigned. This included John Murfield, James Jarret, John Garret, John Thurmond, Richard Thurmoan, Jeremiah Lindsey, John Barker, & John White. (DLW note: This was the last mention of John Wooddy Sr. in the processioning records.)1
  • Death*: between April 1744 and February 1747; Hanover Co., VA1
  • Event-Misc: 4 February 1747; St. Paul's Parish, Hanover Co., VA; Processioners appointed: Samuel Wooddy was appoined processioner "instead of John Wooddy". (DLW note: This is not proof of John's death, but since he is never mentioned again in the processioning records, he most likely died before this date.)1

b. circa 1654, d. circa 1727
  • Marriage*: Principal=Elisheba ?2
  • Birth*: circa 1654; James' birth date estimate is based on James being at least 30 when he was named as a processioner in 1689.2,3
  • Event-Misc: 21 October 1684; New Kent Co., VA; Land Grant: To John Baughan, 500 acres on south side of York River, between branches of Black Creek and branches of Mattadequin Creek, in sight of Wm Pullams ground, crossing Horsleys Path, adjacent to Mr. James Woody's land, formerly Wm Stones to James Moore & 300 acres John Baughan purchased from George Thomas & Samuel Right 200 acres surplus. (DLW note: This document very clearly mentions James Woody. We have not been able to find the details of the land transfer from William Stone(s) to James Woody.)3
  • Event-Misc: 4 May 1689; St. Peter's Parish, New Kent Co., VA; One & only recorded St. Peter's Parish Processioning order: Among many others processioned: James Woody. • Event-Misc*: 14 March 1708/9; St. Paul's Parish, New Kent Co., VA; 1st St. Paul's Parish Processioning Order & Return: Pre. #29. Simon Wooddy & James Wooddy were among those processioned in this precinct. Others: Joseph Baughon, Thomas Ellet, William Bostick, William Leak & Edward Moore.1
  • Event-Misc: 8 December 1711; St. Paul's Parish, New Kent Co., VA; Processioning Order & Return: Pre. #15. Simon Wooddy & James Wooddy were among those processioned in his precinct. Others: Edward Moore, Joseph Baughon, William Bostick, Widd Leak, Charles Bostick, Charles Mooreman & Charles Brain. Another return with the same date omits James Wooddy. ???1
  • Event-Misc: 4 February 1715; St. Paul's Parish, New Kent Co., VA; Processioning Return: Pre. #15. Although Simon Wooddy & James Wooddy was assigned to this precinct, James' name was not mentioned in the return; however, Simon Wooddy was mentioned twice in the return, so this had to be a transcription error. Either, Simon was mentioned twice by mistake or Simon was substituted for James by mistake. However, a James was processioned in Precinct #19 with John Wooddy, so James was reassigned, moved or there were two James Wooddys.1
  • Event-Misc: 13 February 1719; St. Paul's Parish, New Kent Co., VA; Processioning Return: Pre. #15. Simon Wooddy & James Wooddy were among those assigned to this precinct. James was not mentioned in the return; however, a James Wood was mentioned with "no land". Since there was no James Wood in the precinct assignment, this was probably James Wooddy. At any rate James Wood was recorded as having "no land". A Charles Bostick & Charles Brian also were recorded with no land. A James Wooddy was also processioned in Precinct #19 with John Wooddy. This was the last mention of any James the vestry records.1

Adjacent to the river bank, William Adams, Joseph East, Nelson Anderson. Witnesses: W. Norvell, Trifaner Woody.(DLW note: This land was in St Paul's Parish until 1726 and Hanover Co. until 1742. We know nothing about Trifaner Woody, but James Woody probably represented Richard Henderson in the 1748 processioning of Richard's land. Also, this event could be related to the Woody/Brooks association that continued in Caswell & Person Co. NC.)4

  • Event-Misc: 9 March 1769; Albemarle Co., VA; Suit: John Strange (Albemarle) v. James Woodie: Enter caveat for 400 acres on Ballenger's creek Albemarle. Recd. 10/. Qu. if caveat has not been already entered by Philip Mcrae. If so charge nothing.9
  • Event-Misc: 7 April 1769; VA; Suit: Strange v Woodie; The pl. writes me that James Woodie is dead leaving James Woodie (Bedford) his eldest son and two daurs. Mary married to John Brooks (Amelia) and Elizabeth and that Brooks some years ago offered to sell the land. (DLW note: Other documents show Wooddie. Also that the suit was changes to include Brooks. Also that subpoens were issued to Woody Bedford and Brooks in Amelia. The Woody/Brooks connection seems to align with the interactions of James Woody & John Brooks in Louisa Co., howvwer, only James Jr. is named as a son of James. This seem to probably be incorrect; howevar, the other assumed children of James Sr. may not have been known to the plaintiff. )9
  • Event-Misc: 12 July 1770; Albemarle Co., VA; Suit; John Strange vs James Wooddie (Halifax). Enter petn. for 400 acres on Ballenger's Creek patd. by James Wooddie father of def. about 20 years ago. This is same land that cavet is for so dismiss that. ... Sum. was served on the def. in caveat. No patt. to be found for 50 y. back.9
  • Event-Misc: 12 July 1771; Albemarle Co., VA; Caveat: John Strange against John Woodie and John Brooks & Mary his wife for 400 acres on Ballengers Creek in Albemarle. The plaintiff appearing and the defendants having been solemnly called, it is ordered that the plaintiff have a patent for the said land. (DLW note: This suit is is a perplexing problem for us. Since a John Woody signed a 1776 petition in Dover Dist., Goochland, this suit could pertain to him. However, in a 1769 Albemarle suit, a James Woodie was sued by John Strange over the same property. Later that year, proceedings related to this suit alleged that James Woodie was dead leaving James Woodie of Bedford and daughter Mary & John Brooks of Amelia. However, we think that James Woody also had a son John & somehow John ended up with the disputed property or that the James Woodie named as the son of the deceased James Woodie was, in fact, John Woodie. Because of the involvement of John Brooks, who was also recorded with a James Woody in 1752 Louisa, we are inclined to go him and his assumed son John.10
