  • Census: 3 August 1870; Hanover Co., VA; Also in home of John Wooddy, 74, VA was Mary Wooddy, 40, VA.3
  • Census: 10 June 1880; Hanover Co., VA; Also in home of John J. Wooddy, 84, widowed, VA was Mary F. Wooddy, 53, niece, single. (DLW note: To our knowledge, John was never married. The suit filed by Mary in 1883 proves that he did not have any living children at that time.)4,5
  • Death*: circa 1883; Hanover Co., VA5
  • Event-Misc: 10 August 1883; Hanover Co., VA; Chancery Suit: (Abstract) Mary Frances Woody vs. Heirs of John J. Wooddy. On Sep 6, 1875, the Hanover Circuit Court awarded Mary Francis Woody a judgement against John J. Woody for $528 plus 6% interest from that date. This Chancery Suit asked that the 90 acre property of desceased John J. Woody be sold to satisfy this judgement. "John Woody recently dead" "J. J. Woody was at the time of his death without any living issue and that his only heirs are the children and grandchildren of his desceased brothers and sisters". A decree to sell the property was issued Aug 28, 1882 and the property was sold on Oct 15, 1884. Named as heirs: W.T Woody, Marion Abrams, G. Washington Woody, Jos & wife Mildred Jetter, AW/WA Weimer & G. Weimer, his wife, M.A. Woody, Roland Woody, W. Woody, Savannah Woody, A. Rockcharlie, Wm P. Rockcharlie, A.C. Woody, Blair Woody (lunitic) & James Woody.(DLW note: The relationship of Mary Frances Woody to John Jones Woody remains unknow to us. If a record of the suit filed by Mary in 1875 exists, it would probably explain this relationship. Also, we have been able to account for all the named heirs except for the infant Gothright.)5

David Wooddy1,2,3,4

b. circa 1802, d. after 8 September 1860
  • Name Variation: David Woody
  • Birth*: circa 1802; VA1
  • Event-Misc: between 1825 and 1851; Hanover Co., VA; Personal Property Tax: David Woody/Wooddy taxed every year.5,6
  • Event-Misc*: 20 September 1825; Hanover Co., VA; Deposition: David Woody; His father died with 184 acres and gave 1/2 to his mother and the rest to his four children. Land is not yet divided and he has the whole of it. (DLW note: Since David Woody ended up with the entire property of Elisha & Nancy Woody in 1834, it is possible that David was the only surviving child of Elisha.)2
  • Event-Misc: 1826; Hanover Co., VA; Land Tax: David Wooddy, 40 acres, adjacent to William Allen, 16 miles SE of Hanover Court House. Transferred from Reubin Tucker.7
  • Census*: 1830; Hanover Co., VA; David Wooddy: 0,1,0,2,1/0,0,0,0,3,0,0,1.8
  • Event-Misc: 1833; Hanover Co., VA; Land Tax: David Wooddy, 40 acres, adjacent to William Allen, 16 miles SE of Hanover Court House & 92 acres, adjacent to Wm Shepperson, 14 miles SE of Hanover Court House, transferred from Elisha Wooddy estate.9
  • Marriage*: 8 October 1833; Henrico Co., VA; Bond: David Woody & Mary McEwen. Surety: William Shepperson. (DLW note: Wm. Shepperson was the owner of the property adjacent to Elisha Woody and, later, David and his mother, Nancy.); Principal=Mary McEwen1,4
  • Event-Misc: 1834; Hanover Co., VA; Land Tax: David Wooddy conveyed three properties to William Shepperson: 92 acres, 92 acres & 40 acres, all being 14 miles SE of Hanover Court House. (DLW note: Apparently Nancy Wooddy, the wife of Elisha and mother of David, died or remarried or both in 1832 and David Wooddy acquired her 92 acres. It would also seem that David may have been the only living heir of Elisha, since David got the entire 184 acres from the estate(s). However, since this analysis is based on the very brief tax records and not deeds or sales, we suppose that other inheiritors could have sold their portions to David.) (DLW note: The 1832B land tax record is missing from the source reel.)9
  • Event-Misc: between 1839 and 1840; Hanover Co., VA; Land Tax; David Woody 100.75 acres, 13 m SE, adjacent Wm. Shepperson, transferred from Mary Matthews.10
  • Census: 1840; Hanover Co., VA; David Wooddy: 1,1,1,0,0,0,1/1,0,0,0,0,111
  • Event-Misc: 1841; Hanover Co., VA; Land Tax; David Woody 100.75 acres, 13 m SE, adjacent Wm. Shepperson transferred to William S. Tucker.10
  • Event-Misc: between 1842 and 1843; Hanover Co., VA; Land Tax: David Wooddy: 171.75 acres, adjacent John White estate, 16 miles SE Hanover Court House. Transferred from John L. Atkinson.10
  • Event-Misc: between 1844 and 1846; Hanover Co., VA; Land Tax: David Wooddy:171.75 acres, adjacent John White estate, 16 miles SE of Hanover Court House & 8.67 acres, adjacent John White estate, 16 miles SE Hanover Court House. Transferred from Edward G. Syndor.10

Daviid, the father of Charles, was married to Mary McEwen, so William could have been a half-brother; however, there was never a McEwen recorded in the censuses of the Woody household. William could have easily been a cousin.)1,7,5
