Samuel Woody1,2

b. circa 1717, d. circa 1788
  • Note*: Two Samuel Woodys were listed in adjacent precincts in the last Hanover processioning of 1784. One precinct included John and & Micajah Woody. Usually, the Sr. & Jr. suffixes would have been used to separate two different men, but we can't be sure if this was the case. If a second Samuel existed, he would have born about 1754 or so. Later, there were only two Hanover personal property tax events for a Samuel Woody, one in 1782 and one in 1801. In the 1782 "census" a Samuel was enumerated with 6 other people. The last land tax for a Samuel was in 1788 for 120 acres, then his estate was taxed for 120 acres until Micajah Woody acquired his estate in 1800. based on hese records, we do not think two adult Samuel Woodys could have been in Hanover at the same time. So, we posit that if Samuel Sr. had a son Samuel Jr., he did not live long.
  • Marriage*: Principal=Elizabeth ?3
  • Birth*: circa 1717; VA; Birth date estimate based Samuel being about 30 when he was first assigned as a processioner in 1747.4
  • Event-Misc: 8 October 1745; St. Paul's Parish, Hanover Co., VA; Account allowed: Samuel Wooddy, 880 # tobacco. Also, "for keeping Sarah Porters Bastard Child", 800 # tobacco.4
  • Event-Misc: 4 February 1747; St. Paul's Parish, Hanover Co., VA; Processioner appointed: Samuel Woody replaced John Woody.4
  • Event-Misc: 30 September 1751; St. Paul's Parish, Hanover Co., VA; Processioning Order & Return; Pre. #16; Samuel Wooddy & Micajah Wooddy were processioned. Samuel Woody & John Howard were processioners for this precinct.4
  • Event-Misc: 17 November 1755; St. Paul's Parish, Hanover Co., VA; Processioning Order & Return; Pre. #16; Although Micajah Wooddy was not included in the processioning order, he and Samuel Wooddey were processioned. Samuel Wooddey & John White were processioners for this precinct.(DLW note: First mention of Samuel in St. Paul's Parish.)4
  • Event-Misc: 19 November 1759; St. Paul's Parish, Hanover Co., VA; Processioning Order & Return; Pre. #16; Samuel Wooddy & Micajah Wooddy were processioned. Samuel Woody & John White were processioners for this precinct.4
  • Event-Misc: 1763; Hanover Co., VA; Tithable: Samuel Woody, 120 acres. John Woody, 80 acres.5
  • Event-Misc: between 30 November 1763 and 29 February 1764; St. Paul's Parish, Hanover Co., VA; Processioning Order & Return; Pre. #16; Samuel Wooddy & Micajah Wooddy were included in the processioning order, but Samuel Wooddey & John Wooddey were processioned. Samuel Wooddey & James Boatwright were processioners for this precinct.4
  • Event-Misc: 14 February 1764; Hanover Co., VA; Grant: Samuel Woody noted as neighbor of William Bailey's land grant on the north side of the Chickahominy between Powhite & Boatswain's Swamps. (DLW note: New Cold Harbor, Gaines Mill & Cold Harbor battfield are in this area east of Richmond.)6
  • Event-Misc: 29 February 1764; Hanover Co., VA; Processioning Order & Return: Pre. #16. Processioners: Samuel Wooddey & James Boatwright. Also processioned: John Wooddey, Micjah Wooddey, John Howard, Anthony Winston, Thomas Hooper, William Roundtree Xfered to Thomas Hooper, William Thurmond xfered to Thomas Bates, Farquhar Matheson xfered to James White, John Barker deceased, Rob' Braine, John White, Daniel Booz & William Bailey.(DLW note: Since this is the first John Woody entry after the 1747 John Woody entry, we assume that the later John was the son of John whom we assume died between 1744-1747. If true, this assumption seems to support the assumption that the Samuel Woody who replaced John as a processioner in 1747 was the older son or, less likely, the 1st cousin of that John, since the younger John would have been too young to be appointed as a processioner.)4
  • Event-Misc: 30 September 1767; St. Paul's Parish, Hanover Co., VA; Processioning Order & Return: Pre. #16; Samuel Woody & John Woody were included in the processioning order, but Samuel Wooddy, John Wooddy & Micajah Wooddey were processioned. Samuel Wooddy & James Boatwright were processioners for this precinct.4
  • Event-Misc: 12 November 1771; St. Paul's Parish, Hanover Co., VA; Processioning Order & Return: Pre. #16; Samuel Wooddy, Micajah Wooddy & John Woody were pocessioned. Samuel Wooddy & James Bootwright were processioners for this precinct.4
  • Event-Misc: 7 November 1775; St. Paul's Parish, Hanover Co., VA; Processioning Order: Pre. #9; Samuel Woody & John Woody were appointed processioners. No returns.4
  • Event-Misc: 12 November 1779; St. Paul's Parish, Hanover Co., VA; Processioning Orders: Samuel Woody, Micajah Woody & John Woody were assigned to Pre. #8. Nath'l Talley & Issac Burnett were processioners for Pre. #8. Samuel Woody & John Woody were assigned processioners for Pre. # 9.4
  • Census*: 1782; Hanover Co., VA; Census: Samuel Woody, 7 whites, 4 blacks.7
  • Event-Misc: 1782; Hanover Co., VA; Personal Property Tax: Samuel Woody & Thomas Martin. (DLW note: This is the only PPT record for Samuel. Since his land was not taxed as "estate" until 1788, he may have lived with a son until he died. Because of his age/infirmity, his personal property tax was probably not charged after 1782.)1,8
  • Event-Misc*: between 1782 and 1783; Hanover Co., VA; Land Tax: Samuel Woody: 120 acres.9
  • Event-Misc: 26 January 1784; St. Paul's Parish, Hanover Co., VA; Processioning Order & Return: Pre. #8; Samuel Woody & Micajah Woody were assigned to the precinct & processioned. John Woody & Thomas Hooper were the processioners for this precinct. A Samuel Woody was also processioned in Pre. #9.4
  • Event-Misc: 1785; St. Paul's Parish, Hanover Co., VA; Personal Property Tax: Micajah Woody & Pleasant Martin taxed.1
  • Event-Misc: 1787; Hanover Co., VA; Land Tax: Samuel Woody: 120 acres.9
  • Death*: circa 1788; Hanover Co., VA1
  • Event-Misc: 1788; Hanover Co., VA; Land Tax: Samuel Woody, estate: 120 acres.9
  • Event-Misc: between 1790 and 1797; Hanover Co., VA; Land Tax: Samuel Woody, estate: 120 acres in 1790, 1791, 1796 & 1797.9
  • Event-Misc: 1800; Hanover Co., VA; Land Tax: Micajah Woody: 120 acres conveyed from Samuel Woody. (DLW note: For Micajah to inherit Samuel's property would seem highly unlikely. Sam & Micajah seem to have been about the same age, so Micajah could have been Sam's brother; however, all of Samuel's children and their children would have been in line for the estate before Micajah. Sam was enumerated with 7 other individuals in the 1782 census and we know two of his children. Both of these children were dead before 1800, but his daughter, Ann, had known living children in 1800. So we think that Micajah must have purchased the property from Sam's inheritors.)9

Robert C. Woody

b. circa 1793, d. circa 1841
  • Note*: The conclusion that Robert was the son of Frederick Woody is based on very strong circumstantial evidence. Robert named a son Frederick. When Robert was married in 1813, John Wooddy Sr., was identified as his guardian. John was the son of John Wooddy of Hanover and brother of Frederick Sr. When Frederick Sr. died in 1804, he and his brother John Woody were living in King William County. Frederick was the only son of John Woody Sr. that died before 1813.
  • Name Variation: Robert C. Wooddy1,2,3,4,5,6
  • Birth*: circa 1793; Birth date estimate based on Robert's first taxation in 1814 and the 1840 census. Since Robert needed consent for his marriage, he was probably not 21 when he was married in 1813.7,8,9
