Elizabeth ?1

b. circa 1800, d. after April 1866
  • Marriage*: Principal=? Woody1
  • Note*: We think it is possible that Elizabeth was the Angeline Brown that married Samuel Woody in 1839 Kanawha Co., VA. In 1850, Elizabeth was living next to Moses & Charlotte Brown Milam with William A. Woody, 19, VA, Frances Woody, 17, VA, Martha J. Woody, 9, VA & Margaret Woody, 4, VA. We also think that these younger people were Browns or some other surname from a previous marriage of Angeline/Elizabeth. We cannot find Samuel Woody in the 1850 Kanawha census nor can we find any relationship between Angeline Brown & Charlotte Brown. Charlotte & Angeline were not sisters. Angeline was most likely a widow, so she may have been married to a brother of Charlotte. There is some circumstantial evidence to support the theory of the Brown children. The 1840 census for Samuel Woody does not seemingly contain a female that could be a wife that he married in 1839. A William Brown married Susanna Wiseman on Dec 26, 1850 in Kanawha. This family was enumerated in the 1860 Kanawha census. A Frances Brown, 23, married Jacob Grass on Jul 7, 1861 in Kanawha. Frances was born in Bedford Co., VA. We could not find out anything about Martha & Margaret Woody/Brown?. However, a William A. Woody, born 1829, married Charlotte Mauck in Lynchburg, VA on Mar 8, 1857.2
  • Birth*: circa 1800; VA1
  • Census*: 15 November 1850; Kanawha Co., VA; Elizabeth Woody, 50, VA was enumerated living next to Moses & Charlotte Milam. With Elizabeth were Frances Woody, 17, VA, Martha J.Woody, 9, VA, Margaret Woody, 4, VA & Wm A. Woody, 19, VA. Charlotte Milam was the daughter of James & Elizabeth Woody Brown of Bedford Co., VA. Although Charlotte had a sister Elizabeth, she did no marry a Woody. We can't find any sisters for Moses Milam. William A. Woody seems to have removed/returned to Lynchburg, VA, near Bedford, by 1857.
  • Marriage*: 17 August 1865; Kanawha Co., VA; John Fisher, 77 & Betsy Woody, 66. License: 15 June, 1865.; Principal=John Fisher3

Henry Woody1,2,3

b. between 1750 and 1760, d. between 1834 and 1835
  • Note: Evidence concerning the postulated children of Henry Woody: Benjamin was named as son of Henry on the 1804 Buckingham Personal Property Tax list. The death record for William names Henry & Elizabeth Woody as his parents. In 1814, Henry sold land to Benjamin, William & Henry Jr. at a nominal price.
  • Note*: The father of Henry could be Augustine or Henry. I lean toward Henry for two reasons: 1. Henry Jr. had the money to acquire land in Buckingham, as he paid real estate taxes there from 1789-1834. There is no record of Augustine/Austin ever owning land. 2. Henry was recorded in Buckingham for 4 years when Augustine/Austin was living in Fluvanna. Since Henry Woody Sr. did leave a will, Henry Jr. surely received part of the estate.
  • Marriage*: Principal=Elizabeth ?4

Benjamin Woody1,2

b. circa 1783, d. between 1827 and 1828
  • Note*: The evidence for the postulated children of Benjamin varies from strong to circumstantial. Nancy's marriage bond shows Benjamin as her father and John provided surety and was a witness. Booker & John gave their birth counties as Buckingham in the 1850 Buckingham census. The marriage license for Powhatten shows Benjamin & Lucy as parents. Allen & Powhatten lived adjacent in 1860 Nelson Co. census & gave their birth counties as Buckingham. Elizabeth Woody Tyree lived next to Powhatan in 1850 Nelson Co. census with Sally Woody in her home. Powhatan, John, Elizabeth lived very close to each other in the 1870 Nelson census. Henry lived with John & Elizabeth Woody Tyree in 1880 Nelson census. He was named a brother-in-law, but I think uncle-in-law would have been accurate. Powhatan & Allen lived adjacent in the 1880 Amherst census. The birth dates of John, Allen, Powhatan and Booker match very well with the males and their ages shown in the 1810 Buckingham census for Benjamin & in the1830 Buckingham census for Lucy Woody, the widow od Benjamin.

Woody, Paulus Powell, Pauline Woody, Samuel Garland.(DLW note: Two of William & Paulina America's children's death certificates name Stratton as their mother, so it seem that Paulina America seems to have been the widow of a Woody, perhaps an unknown brother of William. Richard Woody was likely another brother of the groom, William Woody.); Principal=Paulina America Stratton8
  • Census*: 4 November 1850; Nelson Co., VA; The 1850 Nelson Co., VA census enumerates three younger children in the William L., 38, & Paulina Woody, 26, household: Frances, f, 9; Willie A., f, 6 & Wayatt A., m, 8/12. In addition a Nancy Woody, f, 22 or 72 is enumerated. The 1860 Nelson Co., VA census enumerates a Louisa Woody, f, 17. Because several other children's names and sexes incorrect, we have assumed that Louisa was Louis. This seems to be confirmed by a transcribed marriage record for 1867 that names Lewis H. Woody, 24, as a son of William America Woody. However, this leaves open the possibility that Louis was adopted or that the transcription is incorrect.1,2,9

So we assume that he was 88 when he died.)8,7

Patsy Woody1,2,3

b. circa 1798, d. 23 January 1887
  • Note*: Patsy Woody was likely the daughter of Henry Woody. In the 1810 Buckingham census, Henry Woody was enumerated with a daughter that was the right age for Patsy. Patsy was born & married in Buckingham. When old Henry died in 1834/1835, his will stipulated that 100 acres of his estate could be, and was, pruchased by H. W. Gerodin in 1835. This looks like a Gividen to me and Patsy married John Gividen. I do not know who H. W. Gerodin was, but I am assuming that Patsy was the daughter of Henry.
