  • Event-Misc*: 2 September 1870; Clay Co., MO; July 29 1870. The editor of the Liberty Tribune requested that the long time residents of Clay Co., MO contribute a short biography to the newspaper. The submissions were published under the title of "The Old Men of Clay County" and on Sep 2,1870 the paper printed the contribution of John McCorkle: "I was born in Augusta County, Virginia, six miles from Staunton, on the 2nd day of March, 1798. My father was a Virginian and served through the entire Revolutionary War in the American Army. He was at Yorktown, and saw Cornwallis' sword handed to General Lincoln(?). I emigrated to Kentucky in 1800. I came to Missouri in 1816, and settlied on the Cuivre in what is now Lincoln County. I came to Clay Co. in 1824 and have lived here ever since. I have always been a Democrat. Am disfranchised." I was intrigued by the reference to General Lincoln and the fact that the editor or transcribber had added a question mark to John's comments. So I did a little research and found that General Cornwallis was so embarassed by his defeat that he sent his second in command to present his sword to General Washington. This breach of protocol resulted in Washington sending his second in command, General Lincoln, to accept the symbol of defeat. So old John new his history.14
