• Event-Misc: After much research into the McCorkles of Clay/Ray/Clinton/etc Counties MO, I have come to the conclusion that the John McCorkle that married Mahala Ann Long is the son of John and Nancy McCorkle that migtated to MO from Green Co., KY. This conclusion is based entirely on circumstanial evidence.

• Death*: 17 March 1874; MO; A tombstone for Mahala Mc Corkle 1839-1921, is in Smith Cemetery, Preston Twp., Platte Co., MO. However, John McCorcle's order for Mahala's tombstone specified the name McCorcle and her exact birth and death dates. The tombsones of Mahala and her son John were to be delivered to Edgerton on Nov 1, 1874. It is not clear that the stones were delivered. Edgerton is in Platte Co., MO. So it looks like the original tombstone was not used or was replaced by another with the wrong death date, probably in 1921. Mahala's son John is also probably buried in Smith Cemetery, but his tombsone was not found in a survey of this cemetery.^5,7

• Birth: 15 July 1849; As far as I can determine, this birth date was calculated from a death date taken from a worn tombstone reading taken in Mt. Zion Cemetery. On 16 Sep 1968, the Courtneys suyveyed this cemetery and read his death age as 43 years and 22 days. They read his death date as 28 Jan 1897. Others have read the death date as 23/28 Jan/Jun 1892. So the calculation of birth date varies about five years depending on which death year is used. However, Samuel was not enumerated in the 1850 census, nor was he ever enumerated in any census as being born before 1850. So I have much more confidence in the 1854 birth date.⁷
